Anniston, Alabama is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama and the county seat of Marshall County. It was founded in 1819 by General Andrew Jackson and named for his wife, Annisborough. The population was 18,623 at the 2010 census. The official slogan of Anniston is "The City on the River." The first white person to live in what is now Anniston was James Covington who arrived in 1796 from Kentucky. He built a cabin on a bend in the creek that later became known as Covington's Crossing. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson came through this area looking for land to purchase and he found a tract of land on which he erected a log courthouse and jail. The town began to grow quickly because of its convenient location next to the river and its easy access to transportation including boats downriver to Huntsville or Mobile Bay. Anniston also became known as an agricultural center because it had good soil, irrigation systems, and crops such as cotton, corn, potatoes, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, hay, wheat flour, beeswax candles (used today), and other items used in early America. By 1830 there were over 200 people living in Anniston with businesses such as stores (a gristmill had been built earlier that year), hotels/motels (the first being built by John Sikes), Doctors' Office (opened by Drs Samuel Hoggarty and Ebenezer Scudder), Baptist Church (1830), Female Academy (opened by Mrs Elizabeth Denny) – all serving residents of Marshall County until about 1900 when roads made it easier for outsiders to come into town and start their own businesses; schools closed; many residents moved away during this time period due to new technology advancements like automobiles which made traveling around town much more accessible than ever before! In 1907 one hundred years after it started out as just a small community near Huntsville on the banks of the mighty Mobile River - Anniston had grown so large that they decided they needed their own city hall so they renamed it "Moorewood" after J R Moorehead who served as mayor from 1911-1920 & 1931-1939 & 1940-1949 & 1950-1959 - mayor pro tempore from 1961-1966 & 1967-1973 under Governor George Wallace; then again from 1974-1978 under Governor Bob Riley; finally rechristened "Anniston" on November 2nd 1978 after becoming part of Butler County effective January 1st 1979 following its merger with Marshall County! A major event that took place during these years was when President Harry S Truman addressed both houses of Congress on December 15th 1951 while staying at Fairmont Hotel in downtown Montgomery - here he announced plans for Project 66 which would be creating jobs throughout United States auto plants thanks mainly to Ford Motor Co.; Announcement followed by news conference at nearby Beaumont Army Air Field about construction projects taking place there resulting in 50000+ jobs added throughout country! This announcement not only helped bring new life into downtown Montgomery but also helped spur additional development along Interstate 10 west of town including several suburbs within driving distance: Pickering Heights/Belleville/Montgomery Lincoln Park/Canton Center/Emmett Township etc... Which has continued unabated ever since!

Anniston, Alabama was founded in 1836 by John C. Smith and his family. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s, becoming a center of cotton production and commerce. Anniston's economy changed dramatically after the Civil War, when the area became a key supply depot for the Union army. Afterward, the town declined in importance but retains a significant presence in local culture and history. The first inhabitants of present-day Anniston were Native Americans who may have lived there for hundreds of years. In 1819, surveyors discovered an uninhabited area to the east of present-day Anniston that would later become Anniston Township. A group of men led by Richard Loyd built a cabin on what is now known as Old Fort Hill in 1821; it served as their base while they surveyed other areas around present-day Anniston. By 1830, settlers had begun moving into present-day Anniston from surrounding counties; initial estimates place the population at between 100 and 150 people. By 1835, Smith had moved from Georgia to start anew in what is now central Alabama; he named his new community "Annapolis." The town quickly grew with its nearby cotton plantations and textile mills; within two years it had reached 1,000 people. By 1840, Smith had relocated again to central Alabama and established another cotton plantation there; this one became known as McMullen Plantation becauseof its wealthy owner Edward McMullen (1798-1868). One additional cotton plantation was established near present day Birmingham before 1850 total land holdings amounted to just under 7 square miles (19 km2). During this time period also saw important changes take place within centralAlabama society: white males began acquiring education beyond basic skills levels while African Americans continued working primarily on subsistence level jobs.; these developments helped spur economic development which eventually led to increased social mobility for both black residents and whites alike.: This transformation not only allowed for more blacks to gain access opportunities within white society but also stimulated industrial growth which contributed significantly to support overall societal stability throughout much of nineteenth century America.: Negroes were increasingly employed in nonagricultural industries such as manufacturing or service work.; however some remained engaged in traditional agriculture due largely to racial restrictions placed on them
