In 1830, John Quincy Adams became president of the United States; he dedicated land at Cahaba River for public education within Georgia limits east of Decatur (now Opelika). Congress passed an act entitled "An Act for Regulating Commerce with Foreign Nations," which provided for a system called "the free navigation doctrine." This opened up trade between North America and Europe through the Gulf Stream route and it led to increased settlement around Mobile Bay because farmers could not afford shipping costs alone to bring goods from distant parts of Great Britain or Europe. During World War II, Anniston played an important role as a munitions plant for United States Military Forces engaged in Operation Dragoon which aimed to open Burma to Allied forces through air operations. After 1945, Anniston grew slowly but steadily into its current size while continuing its close relationship with the military and government institutions that have helped shape its character and economy over many years. Today's economy is based largely on education and health care services; however, Anniston retains much of its historic downtown core which offers many cultural attractions including four museums (the University of South Alabama Museum of Art/Art Gallery; Historic First African Baptist Church/Church House Museum; and Baldwin Wright Park), as well as two renowned restaurants (Cafeteria Carpet Kingdom and Joe's Drive-In)and a variety of shopping options including two large department stores (Jubilee Mall & Sam's Club).
