Anniston is an unincorporated community in Clarke County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,874 at the 2010 census. Anniston is located on U.S. Route 431 south of the city of Birmingham. Anniston has a post office with ZIP code 20510. It was founded in 1881 by Jno. Aiken and named after his wife Anna (née Wheeler). Anniston had a public school from 1903 to 1949 and then became a private school until it closed in 1969. The town's first store opened in 1881 and the last store closed in 1969; all businesses were bought out by local farmer Elisha Hixon who reopened the establishment as the first grocery store in town. The first automobile dealership was established here in 1923 by Pappy Byrd with assistance from Durant Motors Company which had moved its plant to nearby Tuscaloosa that year; this dealership served as a base for other dealerships throughout the years including Kaiser-Frazer, Ford, Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac among others In 1951 when Anniston annexed much larger neighboring towns of Tuscaloosa and Fairhope as part of an effort to become more prosperous than either city, it also annexed what are now known as Mountain Brook Village (later renamed Auburn), Black Belt Village (later renamed Hoover) and White Sands Village (later renamed Satellite). The annexation resulted in increased competition between these villages for jobs and housing so much so that some residents left Anniston for smaller towns or counties beginning around 1960 despite continued efforts by officials to keep the community together In 1984 when Interstate 5 was built through Clarke County bypassing most of rural areas east of Mobile Bayou leading directly into downtown Birmingham, much of Jimmie Byrd's plantation land including parts of Anniston reverted back to Byrd family control giving him exclusive rights to use all surface water on his property within 30 miles radius extending inland upriver including all major rivers flowing through my county forrestalling any speculation about reacquisition rights should he ever desire them again This period came to be known as "Jimmie's Time" due largely to allegations made against him surrounding food storage concerns on his plantation during this time period

Anniston, Alabama is a small town in central Alabama that has been inhabited for over three hundred years. The town was founded by the Choctaw people and was named after the Anniston River. The first white person to live in Anniston was Daniel Boone, who arrived in 1786. In 1819, John C. Frémont discovered gold near Anniston and started an industry of prospecting for gold. The town began to grow rapidly due to this business activity and by 1830, it had a population of around 1,000 people. By 1840, the population had reached 5,000 people and by 1850 it had grown to 10,000 people. In 1881, the US Congress passed a bill creating the city of Birmingham as its new capital and Anniston became part of Birmingham. However, during World War II the town saw significant military activity due to its proximity to Mobile Bay and its role as a supply depot for Allied forces fighting in Europe. After the war ended in 1945, Anniston experienced some more growth but again slowed down during the 1970s and 1980s as manufacturing shifted fromAnniston into other nearby cities such as Birmingham or Huntsville. However, recent economic development has seenanniston grow back up significantly with businesses such as software companies movingin from outside ofAlabamaandnewresidential developmentsbeing built throughout downtown anniston
Anniston was founded in 1819 by Isaac Hitchman and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for Anniston, Alabama, a nearby village. The first store in Anniston was built by Isaiah Hitchman and his brother-in-law, Samuel Denton. In 1825, the town had a population of twenty four people and two stores. The first school in Anniston was opened in 1827 by Revs. John Sibley and James Witherspoon. A second school was built in 1840 by Cephas Bateson. In 1850, the town had a population of seventy three people and four stores. In 1861, the Union Army occupied Anniston after General Robert Ewell's raid on Mobile Bayou that resulted in the Battle of Chickamauga Ridge. After the battle ended, about one hundred Confederate soldiers were captured including many of Hitchman's friends who would later be executed at Fort Sumter In 1865, after Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Johnsonville near Chattanooga with eighty seven thousand troops led by Nathan Bedford Forrest (a general known as "The Terror"), General Ulysses S Grant ordered an all out assault on Fort Pickett which failed due to bad weather conditions
