Anniston is the birthplace of coffee and it has been around since at least 1830. Coffee was first grown in what is now Anniston by a group of Dutch farmers. The beans were roasted and ground in an old mill on the riverfront.
Anniston is a city in and the county seat of Allen County, Alabama, United States. The population was 453 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north side of the Colbert River in east-central Alabama. Anniston was founded by General James Robertson in 1819 as a trading post on the Mobile River. He named it for his wife, Annabella Parishon, daughter of Rear Admiral Sir John Parishon. The first store in town was opened by Wm. Henshaw & Son on July 12, 1824. Jno. Prentice built the first courthouse in 1830 and removed to what is now downtown Anniston on October 15, 1830 after his store burned down near present day University Avenue and State Street. In 1832 David Ladd purchased from General Robertson a tract of land comprising present day downtown Anniston and its environs including Laurel Hill Cemetery and much of Laurel Fork Road today). Ladd laid out several blocks east ofpresent day University Avenue between East Broadway Boulevard and South Park Drive before moving west to take up residence at what is now known as Ladd's Landing (now part of Riverside Church). In 1840 Jno.. Fenton acquired tracts totaling in area northward along East Boulevard from GEO Group plc., one block east of present day US 36th Street to within an approach distance of today's intersection with Yarrow Lane (now Rollin Mall) across Chickasaw Creek; these tracts were later organized into Fenton Township which became Allen County when it was created from parts of Marion County on April 1, 1907 . Ira Selvin bought 3/4 mile northward along East Broad street from GEO Group plc., one block east of present day US 36th Street for $1 per acre in 1903 . A two story brick building soon replaced Selvin’s farmhouse southwest corner lot where he had erected a barn about 1888 Eddie Burchard Jr., son-in-law and brother-in-law to Revd JNO Pearcy served as pastor at First Baptist Church since 1915 until his death in 1980 adjacent to current site occupied by City Hall where he left many artifacts

Anniston is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama, and was the county seat of Tuscaloosa County from 1836 to 1965. As of 2019, Anniston had a population of 92,549. The first European settler in what is now Anniston was George Cooley, who built a cabin on the east side of Mobile Bay in 1821. A post office called Anniston was established in 1824, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1893. The first courthouse in town was built by Judge John Covington on July 4, 1835. It served as the county seat until 1865 when Tuscaloosa County moved to its present location within the city limits. Theodus Coleman founded Coleman's Mercantile Agency at 3rd and Capital Streets in 1830; it became one of the largest mercantile firms in Alabama for many years before being acquired by J W McGee & Sons Limited (later Coca-Cola) in 1912. In 1870, James Fenton laid out what would become known as Main Street NW; he named it after his parents, Isaac Fenton and Eunice Gaulton Fenton. In 1905, J B Steele erected Steele's Cotton Mill which continues to produce cotton today with over 100 employees The University of Alabama opened its doors for undergraduate study at nearby campus at Union Chapel on December 1st, 1907 under Rev Dr William Hargrave Sinclair...In 1911 Main Street NW served as downtown’s main arterial road when US Highway 33A bypassed town center along that route....main thoroughfare has since been renamed Enterprise Boulevard

In 1835, Anniston became the capital of Alabama. The city experienced rapid growth during the 1850s and 1860s, thanks to its position at the crossroads of several important routes. By 1870, Anniston had reached its peak as a commercial and industrial center. However, during the American Civil War, Anniston fell to Confederate forces and was destroyed by Union forces.
