Anniston was founded in 1819 by General John C. Breckinridge and his wife, Martha. The town was named after Anniston, Alabama, a small town in Alabama that had been the seat of government for Muskogee County until 1817. The first store in Anniston was built on the corner of Market and Elm Streets. In 1828, Anna Wagoner married Samuel Elam and moved to Anniston from Shelbyville, Tennessee. It is said that Anna Wagoner's father had come to Tennessee from Kentucky when young and he became an oilman in Knoxville before moving to nearby Nashville where he died. Anna Wagoner's mother also lived in Shelbyville for a time before coming to live with her daughter in Anniston. The first courthouse in Anniston was built on the corner of Main and Elm Streets in 1829. The courthouse served as the county seat until it was replaced by the present courthouse building in 1906. In 1830, two brothers named Alexander and Sylvester Pemberton bought land adjacent to what is now downtown Anniston and began developing it into a town. They named their new town after their parents, Nicholas Pemberton (1801-1873) and Sophia Pemberton (1802-1876). As development continued throughout the 1840s, other settlers arrived including John Tilton who settled on land east of downtown at what is now known as Trenton Street; James Fenton who settled near present day Montevallo Avenue; George Higginson who located near present day Clarksdale Boulevard;and John Wilkinson who settled along northbound US 31 between today's Patton Avenue and Enterprise Road. On October 12th, 1860, Confederate forces attacked Union troops stationed at Fort Donelson opposite what is now downtown Anniston while they were celebrating Midterm Election Day celebrations which resulted in over 100 deaths among both sides during the battle known as "the Battle of Fort Donelson". Aftermath of the battle lead to increased tension between Unionists and Confederates throughout much of southernTennessee where Confederate sympathizers continued living despite being outlawed by state law as well as many northerners feeling responsible for allowing such violence to take place within their own borders (). On November 3rd following thisADN event local residents gathered outside of City Hall to demand that Mayor Elijah White not allow any more demonstrations against Confederate forces taking place inside city limits due to fear that such protests would become violent towards Unionists (). White refused these demands stating that there should be only peaceful protests rather than attacks on troops occurred within city limits which led some residents to call for annistons destruction . less
Anniston was founded in 1825 by Major General Andrew Jackson. The city became a major center of cotton production and commerce after the discovery of large deposits of the crop in the area. The city prospered until the Civil War, when it suffered heavy casualties. After the war, Anniston resumed its growth and development as a major cotton and manufacturing center. Today, Anniston is one of the most important cities in Alabama with a rich history and cultural significance.
