The United States Air Force has a rich history of deploying gift baskets and other snacks to members of the military in Anniston, Alabama. The first deployment occurred on October 17, 1951 when a basket of candy was sent to the Anniston Air National Guard Armory. The gift was in response to an order from then-Air Defense Commander General Leslie McNair. That same year, another thank you basket was sent to troops stationed at Fayetteville Army base after they donated several items including air conditioned vehicles and tents. In 2007, a basket filled with cigars and cigarettes was delivered to Mobile Brigade Combat Team 1st Battalion (Alaska) 9th Infantry Regiment after their donation helped support Operation Neptune’s Spear during Operation Iraqi Freedom. A year later, a basket filled with Miami Dolphins memorabilia were shipped directly to players and coaches at Doak Campbell Stadium following their donation to special effects contractor Blue Origin LLC involved in developing New Shepard spacecraft for NASA launch missions. Finally, in 2010, a basket filled with personalized items such as puzzles and hot dogs were sent anonymously to military families living near Tallahassee Naval Air Station after they made donations towards hurricane relief efforts during Hurricane Matthew. These gestures show just how much love is put into gifting gifts for those serving our country—and how grateful we are that these people choose the United States Air Force as their recipient!

Anniston was founded in 1821 by Captain John F. Marshall, a member of the First Regiment of Alabama Militia. It became a town in 1834 when it was included in the Jackson County townsite system. The first school in Anniston was opened in 1833. The town's first mayor was Wm. Swayne and its first justice of the peace, A. H. Wallace. In 1861, Anniston saw one of the most significant events in its history when Confederate General Robert Ewell's army marched into the town to sack it after his unsuccessful attempt to cross over the Little Tennessee River at Tellico Gap (now Chattanooga). The fall of Chattanooga marked an end to the Civil War and Anniston quickly recovered from what had been a devastating event for its community and residents. In 1870, local businessmen organized a water company that built two dams on White Oak Creek for irrigation purposes; this led to increased development within Anniston and new businesses were established such as grocery stores, lumberyards, breweries and hotels. Anna Mae College (later renamed University of Alabama)was founded in 1915 as part of a merger between two other small colleges located near Anniston- Vestavia Hills College (later renamed Vanderbilt University)and Tuskegee Institute (then known as Tuskegee Normal School). The college grew rapidly during World War II with enrollment increasing from 100 students to more than 2,000 by 1945 due to wartime demand for military training; however, enrollment declined following the war and closure of some schools In 1954, President Dwight D Eisenhower announced plans to build Interstate 10 through central Alabama; accordingly, construction began on I-10 through downtown Anniston with major projects such as widening streets and adding interchange ramps including one at Main Street/I-10 which served as both an important transportation link between rural areas north of Birmingham and city dwellers south of Birmingham while also providing access to education opportunities for those living within I-10's reach. As I-10 continued expanding eastward along Highway 3A until reaching US 82 exit 9 about halfway between Birmingham and Huntsville, business interests within downtown started lobbying Congress for funds specifically designed towards developing eastern side neighborhoods adjacent to I-10 including what would become MidtownAnniston which would include much high technology industry activity resulting from later expansions undertaken by Google/ Motorola Incorporated followed by other large tech companies such as Hewlett Packard Co., Microsoft Corporation The NOW Center mall opened approximately 1 mile west of downtownAnniston on US 83 just north of Bulldog Road in 2006 giving much needed retail space inside an otherwise industrial setting adjacent directly Interstate 10 with easy access onto adjoining neighborhoods forming MidtownAnnistorians area thereby creating many jobs that have helped keep that area vibrant over time
