The Alexander City, Alabama National Guard was organized on July 17, 1892. The unit was raised by Confederate veterans in order to provide security for the city during the period of Reconstruction. The guard served as an auxiliary to the Alabama State Militia and played a significant role in the struggle against Reconstructionism. After the Ulysses S. Grant administration were removed from office in 1877, many veteran soldiers from various states formed militias in order to protect their state governments from becoming dependencies of federal power. This event marked the beginning of a tradition of military service that would be perpetuated through several decades of American history. The Alexander City, Alabama National Guard met its first challenge when local white supremacists attacked black residents on November 5, 1892. In response to this attack, Governor James Hance called for a militia force to be assembled and sent into town to quell violence. The national guard arrived early Monday morning and began skirmishing with white supremacists until reinforcements arrived. After two days of fighting, some 150 men had been killed or wounded while only six people were arrested and charged with crimes related to racism. In 1902, General John Jumper ordered theAlexander City National Guard detachment ( Company A) which fought at Bull Run Bridge against Confederate forces under Robert EasleySmith Jr.. Aftermath left behind evidence that Smith's brigade had engaged battle efficiently and without loss; his conduct has been praised by former Union General George Meade as one of exceptional valor during this conflict.(1) This victory demonstrated that not all Confederate officers were cowards fleeing across Virginia's Potomac River after defeat at Appomattox Court House; some units actually fought effectively for their state against an overwhelming foe.(2) -In 1916 members of Company B (the reserve company) helped suppress a strike by coal miners in Homestead, Pennsylvania.(3) With World War I coming on forefront United States citizens responded with patriotism unprecedented since before the Civil War era due both to economic reasons and political instability caused by Congress' refusal to appropriate money for reconstruction following Andrew Johnson's re-election as president in 1868(4). On April 15th 1915 President Wilson signed Executive Order 9346 giving authority for “military defense” within United States borders should war arise between America and any other nation or group thereof including any country hostile towards us such as Germany or Italy etc...On October 10th 1915 Alexander City was directly invaded by German militarist troops under Feldmarschall Ludwig von Moltke who carried out widespread looting throughout the city looted properties worth millions including churchess factories etc...and executed over 100 civilians mainly women children & old men
