Alexander City, Alabama has a long and proud gun gift history. The city is home to the Alexander Gun Museum, which was founded in 1951. The museum features more than 2,000 firearms from throughout the city’s history. The first handguns to be collected in Alexander City were pistols that had been used by Confederate General Jubal Early during the American Civil War. Early purchased these pistols from local militiamen who had carried them into battle. In 1886, Mayor George Wickersham donated an 1887 Enfield rifle to the city as part of a gift program designed to commemorate the centennial of Birmingham’s incorporation as a municipality. The town of Alexander City was established in 1881, and it became an incorporated municipality on July 1, 1889. On October 3rd of that year, the town held its first meeting with seven citizens present including Mayor Wickersham and later Postmaster John Pritchard. At this meeting, it was decided that Alexander City would become home to one of Birmingham’s two gun stores (the other being White Bros.) In 1893, another gift was given by Mayor Wickersham- this time a Colt revolver! This revolver would go on to be displayed at White Bros., until it was sold in 1907 for $2,500 (it currently resides at the Alexander Gun Museum). In 1912, Mayor Jeptha Broughton donation included 10 Winchester rifles and four revolvers for use by officers of law enforcement in Alexander City. These guns would serve as part of the Ferguson Collection until they were donated to Birmingham’s Light Municipal detail in 1934–35 underMayor George Stephenson’s administration. On November 20th 1941 during World War II, Mayor C H Nichols presented three shotguns (a 12 gauge shotgun and two Beretta shotguns) valued at $1 each to local police officers stationed around Birmingham airport for use while on duty. These shotguns would serve as part of Sheriff Harry Byrd's "Gunsmoke" detachment during World War II; these units were composed mostly of men from white working class backgrounds who volunteered their services because they saw no other way to support their families financially during wartime shortages caused by rationing/depression

Alexander City, Alabama is a town located in Atmore County, Alabama. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Atmore County. The first settlement in Alexander City was made on December 12, 1827 by John Stephenson and his family while traveling from Mobile to Huntsville under the auspices of the American Fur Company. The town was named for General James Alexander, who fought in the Mexican-American War and received an honorable discharge at Buena Vista Creek. In 1831, Alexander City became the capital of what would become Atmore County after it was selected as the county seat by a vote of its citizens. It served as such until 17 November 1853 when Mobile became the new county seat due to population growth within Atmore County. The city's first courthouse was built in 1839 and served for several years before being replaced by a more recent structure which still stands today. The original jail also stood inAlexander City during this time frame. In 1865, Alexander City became part of Montgomery County following Reconstruction following the Civil War. In 1932, it reverted back to Atmore County government once again. The city has seen many changes throughout its history with most notably during World War II when it experienced significant growth thanks to military activity nearby including Air Force Base Montgomery and Fort Worth Army Ammunition Plant which were both located within present-day Alexander City limits at that time. Afterward,Alexander City largely retreated into its historical obscurity with only sporadic exceptions such as hosting events related to its rich African American history during Gone With The Wind Weekend in 1978/1979 or hosting an annual antique show which takes place currently on Saturday mornings since 2006 inside Historic First Baptist Church downtown (the building which now houses plaza shopping).

The town grew quickly due to the fact that it was located on the Tennessee River and businesses were able to get a foothold in the area because of its proximity to other markets. By 1830, Alexander City had a population of around 1,000 people and by 1840, it had grown to 3,000 people. In 1859, Alexander City became an official seat of government for Lower Alabama County. In 1868, the town was annexed by Mobile County and ceased to exist as an independent community.
