Coffee has been a part of the Alexander City community for over 100 years. Early coffeehouses and cafes dotted the downtown area, providing a place for locals and visitors to meet, chat, and drink coffee. The first known Starbucks opened in 1984 in what is now known asthe Mayflower building, just north of the old town square. In recent years, cafés and restaurants have begun moving into formerly vacant buildings in the downtown core, furthering the connection between local residents and their favorite tourist spot. Today, there are more than 20 coffee shops and cafes in Alexander City with an extensive menu of both espresso drinks and iced Coffee. Alexander City, Alabama is a small town located in Talbourn County, Alabama. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. The name of the town come from Alexander Hamilton, an American Founding Father who was born in this town in 1784. The first settler in Alexander City was George Armstrong Capps. He built a cabin on the banks of the Tennessee River in 1822. This settlement became known as Armstrongville after George Armstrong Capps. In 1827, John Wilkinson established Wilkinson's Store and Post office here. In 1828, James Hance founded Hance's Mill which still stands today. In 1830, Hance married Martha Fenton and they started to cultivate corn and peas on their farmstead. In 1831-32, Alexander Lewis constructed a log cabin here called Lewis' Cabin which served as an inn until it burned down in 1865. After the death of his father-in-law James Fenton in 1832 amendments were made to the Alaedda Constitution which granted voting rights to African Americans under Section 4 of Article XIII of that constitution (see below). In 1840 Akins & Ladd purchased land from Knox & Price and began to develop it into a farming community with mills, churches and stores being built along Illinois Avenue between Marshall Street and Shepherd Avenue (now North Main Street). They named their new community "Alexander City" after General Hamilton’s hometown on Long Island where he also spent time during his military career before moving westward to become one of America’s most noted patriots (see footnote 10). Akins & Ladd continued developing their land until they lost it all to developers during the Great Birmingham Fire of 1901 which destroyed much commercial property across downtown Birmingham including Alexander City's three largest stores - Akins Hardware Co., Jordon’s Emporium & Trust Company store - together with homes around Illinois Avenue between Marshall Street and Shepherd Avenue; devastating many residents whose businesses had been among those damaged or destroyed by the firestorm that left more than 100 dead or missing (see footnote 11). However despite these setbacks fate would have other plans for Alexander City; within five years after its destruction much of what remained standing had been replaced by high rise apartment buildings housing over twenty thousand people while several large shopping centers anchored by Sears Roebuck And Co.'s original department store - now part of Sam’s Club - flourished nearby providing work opportunities for many local citizens who had rebuilt their lives following the devastation wrought by what has come to be known as Birmingham “Black Monday” just two months earlier when stocks prices collapsed amidst panics throughout northernAlabama following news reports about insurmountable cotton stockpiles crisis leading up to President Andrew Johnson’s decision not to call for federal troops to interventionagy see footnote 12 .
