The first settler in what is now Albertville was John Overton, who arrived in 1819. He named his settlement after Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria. In 1832, James Fisk established a wharf on the Mobile River to service traders coming from Tennessee and Georgia. Over time, other entrepreneurs followed Fisk's lead and founded businesses in Albertville including A & W Barber Shop (1868), J & H Furniture store (1892), Poultry Processing plant (1912), Lumberyard (1920), Drugstore (1927) and Telephone Company building (1964). By 1890, Albertville had become an important transportation hub for cotton salesmen traveling to nearby plantations in Bottomsboro and Cullman counties. In 1901, Alabamians elected their first black mayor, George Washington Payne with over 60% of the vote—the largest percentage ever given to any municipal office in Alabama at that time. Payne served two terms before being succeeded by Mayor Turney Willis Hillman in 1920-24 who then served as State Superintendent of Schools from 1933 until his death in 1945; he was also one of only three African Americans to serve as mayors or superintendent during segregationist times in Alabama In 1955, when Montgomery erupted into violence over plans for a segregated school system within Montgomery County – known as "the bus boycott" – local citizens took up arms against white supremacists called "The White Citizens' Council". Led by Ernest Hemingway Jr., this group styled themselves "The Black Panthers", while authorities characterized them as terrorists motivated by racial hatred After months of street fighting and bombings throughout downtown Montgomery, King threatened to take matters into his own hands if townspeople did not back down; on April 26th,. 1965, five days after Selma had voted to integrate schools within Montgomery County using non-violent means such as buses instead of violence – becoming America's first municipally integrated school system – King was assassinated outside Ebenezer Baptist Church by white supremacists working with local law enforcement
Albertville was founded in 1824 by Augustus L. Blackburn and his wife, Sarah E. Blackburn. The town was named after General Albert Sidney Johnston, who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as a U.S. Senator from Alabama from 1853 to 1861. In 1886, the city of Birmingham became Albertville's principal settlement and it continued to be its primary economic center until the early 1940s when Birmingham's population eclipsed that of Albertville.
