The Air Force has been giftgiving for many years in Albertville, Alabama. The first gift given to the Air Force by an individual was a rifle. The rifle was given to Maj. John M. Shultz, who served as the Commanding General of the AFS at Wright-Patterson AFB from 1945-1949. From that time on, gifts have been given for various services and activities within the Air Force. In 1941, a hangar and office building were built for the AFS at Wright-Patterson AFB. This facility would be used extensively for storage and later served as Headquarters of the AFS from 1951-1972 inclusive. During this time period, it was also home to numerous units including: 1st Bombardment Wing (later 1st Aerospace Division), 3d Bomber Squadron (later 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing), 4th Bombardment Squadron (later 4th Tactical Airlift Wing), 5th Bombardment Squadron (later 5th Tactical Airlift Wing), 6th Bombardment Squadron (later 6th Tactical Airlift Wing), 7th Missile Squadron (later 7th Space Research Center), 8th Lightweight Bomber Squadron/Attack Group, 910 Heavy Maintenance Unit/Unit Support Group, 11 Security Forces detachment #1 and #2, 12 Security Forces detachment #3 and #4; Reserve Training Units; USAF Academy Cadet Corps;and more! After becoming an industrial center with heavy manufacturing during World War II, Albertville experienced a significant decline following the end of hostilities but has since seen some resurgence thanks to its location within Jefferson County and its role as a cultural and economic hub for southwest Alabama.

Albertville is a small town in Alabama, located on the aptly named Albertville-Montgomery County line. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville metropolitan area. Albertville’s earliest settlers were farmers who arrived in 1837 from Tennessee and Georgia. They built log cabins and started a grocery store. A post office was established in 1839 and remained in operation until 1865. The first shoe factory in Alabama was located here in 1840 by J.C. Higginbotham and his son-in-law, Wm Hilty Jr., according to historical research done by Dr. John Fenton of Auburn University. This Site also served as the home of Ulysses S Grant during his military service as General of all Armies during the American Civil War; he occupied this building between 1861 and 1865 while stationed at Fort Pickens on Mobile Bayou (now Gulf Beach). The first school in what is now Albertville was founded early in 1847 by Mrs.(Hannah) Charlesworth with students coming from Decatur, Alabama and Montgomery County as far east as Atmore, AL.... In 1850–1851 Rev Rufus King conducted religious services for three weeks each week at what is now First Baptist Church which later became known as First United Methodist Church...In 1861 schools were opened up again when a new school district formed out of parts of Montgomery County including Albertville In 1870 white children constituted only about one third of all pupils enrolled within the newly created school district but by 1880 that percentage had increased to almost 50%. By 1890 black children made up almost half of all pupils within the new school district...In 1901 First Baptist Church moved to its present site where it still meets today After World War I there were no more schools open because most citizens were too young or too old to learn how to read or write So public education ended with high school graduation rates around 70% for whites and 80% for blacks In 1925 white enrollment increased to over 150 while black enrollment decreased to about 60%. Today there are just 10 residents living within limits set by 1920 census statistics
Albertville was founded in 1819 by General John C. Breckinridge and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for General Albert Pike, an important figure in the American Revolution. A cotton gin was built in Albertville in 1824 and it became one of the most important cotton towns in the area. The town also had a post office from 1825 to 1829. In 1830, the town voted to incorporation and they were renamed Albertville City Limits. In 1896, Albertville became a county seat and it has been that way ever since.
