The Wyoming Air National Guard's history dates back to World War I. On September 9, 1918, the first organized unit of the state's air forces was created when a detachment of the 169th Aero Squadron was activated at Cheyenne Municipal Airport. The squadron flew training missions for the 1st Aero Wing in support of the war effort. In 1932, Air Defense Command was established in Wyoming and local militia units were transferred to its command. In 1938, General George Custer's body was interred at Fort Randall Army Cemetery in Cheyenne; his remains were exhumed and placed within an American military casket and flown to Rapid City, South Dakota for burial. A public rally attended by dignitaries and members of Congress resulted in passage of legislation authorizing purchase of a bomber aircraft from Boeing Aircraft Corporation for $3 million. The first plane arrived at Yellowstone National Park on July 5, 1939; it served as part of Bomber Command until 1945. Wyoming has been an important location for aviation since pre-war days with many airports serving as vital staging areas during both world wars. The Cheyenne Municipal Airport served as one such airport during both World Wars while other important destinations include Gardiner (1915), Sheridan (1917), Wickenburg (1920), Douglas (1925) and Pawnee Junction (1927). During World War II, the airport saw increased activity with more than 50 flights per day being made between Cheyenne and various points eastward including Omaha Beachhead, Europe and Japan respectively. After the war ended, many Beechcraft 1900s were acquired by the Wyoming Air National Guard which continued to fly them into their 40th anniversary year in 2019!

The Wyoming Air National Guard's 137th Airlift Wing is the current recipient of the USAF's "Eagle" Award for excellence in airlift. This honor was bestowed on the wing during a ceremony at an airstrip near Cheyenne on July 5, 2013.
Cheyenne is a city in Wyoming, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Laramie County and the home of the Cheyenne Indian Reservation. Cheyenne was founded by Kit Carson in 1877 as a cattle ranch. The city was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who died in 1887 during an engagement with Dakota Sioux Indians near present-day Fargo, North Dakota. The site where Custer's body was found has been situated within Cheyenne limits since 1888. In 1907, the first post office opened in Cheyenne; it continued to be open until 1969. In 1861, when Wyoming acquired its current boundaries, most of what are now Laramie and Sheridan counties were included within what are now Laramie and Wind River counties. As a result of this change, the population of Cheyenne increased from 350 to 1,500 over the next few decades due to people moving into western Wyoming for economic opportunities available closer to Denver and other eastern cities. By 1912, however, economic conditions had deteriorated so much that many people left for new opportunities in Oklahoma and Texas; by 1921 only about 100 residents remained inCheyneNd by 1930 there were only thirty-eight residents remaining according to USGS counts During World War II both localities saw several thousand soldiers serve on various fronts including Fort Riley National Military Park east of town and Fort Knox west of town which together hosted more than 50%ofthe entire military stationed in Wyoming during that time In 1949 the then Laramie County commissioners chose not to annex Sheridan County following strong local objections because they felt it would have resulted in an increase in population size without corresponding services or infrastructure development being provided The annexation did take place two years later but without any public input or celebration In 1957 WyoLaws became two separate states with Cheyne becoming part of Red Rock County while Sheridan went under Union COUNTY control
The United States Air Force was founded on April 12, 1947. The USAF is the largest air force in the world with over 191,000 personnel. It provides air defense and supporting activities in more than 80 countries. The USAF has a global reach and is responsible for providing humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and peacekeeping missions. The service motto is "No-fly Zone." The history of the Air Force gift shop begins with World War II when combat aircraft were not available to purchase or use as gifts. In 1945, General George Custer's body was repatriated from Europe after being buried in Mexico City; his remains were brought back to the United States and interred at Arlington National Cemetery. On December 8, 1946 President Harry S Truman issued an executive order establishing the Military Forces Service Medal (MFM). This award consisted of two parts: the Purple Heart which could be awarded to members who were wounded in action; and the Legion of Merit which could be given to enlisted members who had conspicuous gallantry or heroism while serving their country during World War II or any other conflict since 1918. On May 6, 1947 First Lieutenant Colonel John Hogg presented General Curtis LeMay with a regulation-sized gold medal for his services as Commanding General 4th Bomb Wing at McGuire AFB near Charlotte NC on July 26, 1945 when he led 460 returning veterans home from Japan after Operation Overlord; this event helped increase American support for MacArthur's campaign against Japan following World War II ending days earlier
In 1952, the USAF created the Air Force Academy to educate airmen in all branches of service. The Academy has since grown into one of the most prestigious military academies in the world, with over 1,500 students pursuing a degree at its doors.
Cheyenne, Wyoming is a small town located in Carbon County, Wyoming. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1868 by the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes of Native Americans. The town became an important transportation and trading center during the early 19th century. In 1907, Cheyenne was designated as the capital of Wyoming. The first post office at Cheyenne were opened on October 15, 1868 by John Deneen. The name of the town came from Chief Seattle's words "Cheyennes We will be happy." The first store in Cheyenne was established by Wm. Burtis on December 12, 1869. By 1870, there were 10 stores in the community. In 1875, $10 worth of goods were sold at one time at a local store%. By 1888, there were 16 saloons in Cheyenne with a total circulation of over $2 million annually! In 1907, when Wyoming became a statehood state, Cheyenne became its capital city with 1 521 residents! For many years it was considered to be one of the most important engineering and cultural centers for westerners because of its role as both a transportation hub and center for agriculture which contributed greatly to Wyoming's economy during this period; however, recent studies have shown that it may not have been an economic center as much as previously thought due to lack of infrastructure and competition from other larger cities in the region
