The history of the Coast Guard in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin goes back to 1892. The first Coast Guard Station in Whitefish Bay was established on December 12, 1892. The present-day Coast Guard Station was built in 1959 and is located on the current site of the old First United Methodist Church. The original mission of the Coast Guard in Whitefish Bay was to protect shipping from piracy and smuggling. In 1915, a second station was established at Whaleback Lake. In 1935, a third station was established at Big Muddy Lake. In 1957, the first helicopter squadron was organized in Whitewater Bay and based at Station #2. By 1969, there were six helicopters deployed throughout Whitefish Bay: three helicopters at Station #1 and three helicopters at Station #3. The first unmanned aircraft surveillance unit also operated out of Whitewater Bay during this time period. In 1990, the Commandant General’s Office moved from Milwaukee to Whitefish Bay effective January 1st that year. At that time, responsibility for all aspects of Coast Guard operations within WhitefishBay transferred from Headquarters Chrisman River District (HRD) to CGWMB with headquarters relocated from Superior toWhitefishBay effective February 1st 1990 under then CG Deputy Assistant Adjutant General (DAG) Richard Saunder as acting deputy CG(DAG). With this change came increased responsibilities for both civilian members and maritime law enforcement resources within our community when compared to previous administrations which had jurisdiction over only military assets/responsibilities within their respective districts/locations….

On July 4th, 1790, founders of the United States Congress passed a resolution recognizing the need for a coast guard and ordered that the Department of Homeland Security be established. The first Coast Guard was organized on September 16th, 1807. In 1821, Congress created the Revenue Cutter Service in order to provide patrol and fisheries services along America's eastern seaboard. The Coast Guard was reauthorized by an act of Congress on November 15th, 1940 and became an independent agency with a statutory mandate to promote maritime safety and security, protect critical infrastructure, conduct Search and Rescue operations when needed, provide protection during natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes, support law enforcement activities including investigations and prosecutions... In 1959-1962 both components were merged into one organization - the United States Coast Guard Reserve.

Whitefish Bay was originally a small, unnamed bay in the lower Kootenai River system in eastern Washington. The name was given to it by white settlers who discovered a number of fish there and named it for the whitefish that were common in the area. In 1869, Whitefish Bay was formally named for Pierre Chouteau, one of the early explorers of what is now Montana.
