Greenfield is a town in Green County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Greenfield was George Witherspoon on July 6, 1836. He and his family were the first to come to this area from Decorah, Iowa. Witherspoon's brother-in-law, Daniel Dunham, also came early and added land to what would later become Greenfield. A post office called Greenfield was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. Greenfield started as a small farming community with only twelve residents when it incorporated as a village on November 3rd of that year by an act of the state legislature under the name "Waukesha". The village had been organized by Moses Brownell who served as its first mayor and banker; John Fenton was also elected treasurer. initial growth came about because of heavy demand for goods shipped out via rail from Chicago due to construction around that time including the Wisconsin Central Railroad which connected Milwaukee with Racine and many other towns along its route. On December 5th 1860 voters approved a charter for the "City of Greenfield" which became an official town on January 1st 1861 thanks to efforts by Mayor John Fenton and Treasurer Moses Brownell (the founder of Fox Point). Greenfield is a town in western Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,486 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenfield-Aurora Micropolitan Statistical Area. Greenfield was platted in 1848 as a village by commissioners led by David Goodyear and James Fenton. The first post office opened in 1850, and the name was changed to Greenfield in 1873. The town was incorporated on February 17, 1907. The first school operated in a small building on Main Street until it moved to its current location in 1909. In 1916, World War I veteran Johnnie Lewis set up a machine shop near the now defunct post office to help war efforts. Lewis died soon afterwards from anemia contracted while working at his shop. In 1927, local businessmen organized the Aurora-Greenfield Chamber of Commerce and named themselves "The Business Men of Aurora." They built a new building on Third Avenue for their organization and continued to use it until 1990 when they sold it to the Town of Greenfield. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 3,486 people residing in the town: 2,912 households; 1,846 families; and 927non-families residing within racial boundaries (of which 5% were Hispanic).
