The U.S. Army has a long and proud history in South Charleston, West Virginia. The city was founded by Americans in 1819 and became a military outpost during the American Revolution. The United StatesArmy presence ended after the war but South Charleston continued to grow as a manufacturing center for munitions and other defense products. Today, South Charleston is home to one of the largest army installations in the country with over 10,000 soldiers and civilians living on-base. In addition to its role as an arms depot, South Charleston also serves as an area of training for local law enforcement officers and firefighters. The United States Army's 8th Infantry Division gift history began in Charleston, West Virginia on October 15, 1907 when Brigadier General John C. Fremont placed an order for 1,000 rifles and 1,500 revolvers. The division first served in the Spanish-American War before being re-organized in 1903. After the war, the division was stationed in California before being deployed to the Mexican border during World War I. The division fought at Monterrey and Carrizal before returning home in 1919. In 1924, the division was moved to Fort Sheridan based in Illinois. The unit participated in World War II as part ofArmy Pacific Theater where it fought at Kwajalein Atoll and Okinawa Island. After the war, the division was headquartered at Fort Sam Houston until it relocated to South Charleston on November 1, 1951. From 1951-1957, the 8th Infantry Division served as a garrison force ofFort Bonifacio which is now known as Camp Aguinaldo within MacArthur University’s Diliman Campus compound that also houses South Charleston High School and several other public buildings. In 1957-1959, after a period of conversion into an armored brigade with artillery support under command of Major General Curtis LeMay III (Ulysses S., Jr.),the 8th Infantry Division returned to its original role as a garrison force forFort Sam Houston until it relocated back to Charleston on October 15th 1959 near present day Fort Sumter Park

The 1st New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment was ordered to join the Union army and deliver their allegiance in person. The regiment's commanding officer, Colonel Edward S. Chambers, traveled to Albany, New York to personally deliver the news.
South Charleston, West Virginia is a small town in Mercer County, West Virginia. The population was 1,919 at the 2000 census. It is located on the east side of the Kanawha River and is adjacent to Greenbrier County to the north. The name comes from South Carolina and means "place of sweet cane." The first permanent settler in what is now South Charleston was Nicholas Longstreet, who came in 1775 from Charlotte, North Carolina. He died within a few years of his arrival. Colonel John Blair established Post Office No. 2 here in 1779 after Congress granted him land for that purpose. In 1802 General Andrew Jackson's forces burned this post office buildings and stores to clear the way for their march on Washington D.C.. In 1881 David Lowrance organized a Methodist Episcopal church here which has since grown into one of America's largest evangelical Protestant churches with over 150 memberships across 14 states and many international affiliates. Lowrance also founded the famous Lowrance Brewery which still operates today as an independent brewery with its own bottling plant and production facility outside of South Charleston. The local high school was formed in 1980 when South Charleston citizens decided to establish their own school system separate from Greenbrier County Schools; however it only lasted until 1984 when Greenbrier County schools took over operations again. The current high school building opened in fall 1997 and serves as both primary and secondary education for students in grades 7-12 throughout Mercer County as well as West Virginian suburbs bordering on Lewisburg (population: 20,000) to the south; Clarksburg (population: 25,000), Radcliff (population: 30,000), White Sulphur Springs (population: 10,000), etc., all within Mercer County limits while serving portions of Greene County beyond those boundaries too!
South Charleston was founded in 1795. The town was named for General Hugh Mercer's family, who donated the land to the new community. The first church in South Charleston was built in 1798 and the first school in 1802. In 1865, Confederate soldiers burned down the town's courthouse and many of its buildings.
