During World War II, West Virginia was one of 12 states called into service to help fight against Nazi Germany and Japan. After the war ended, many warships were decommissioned or mothballed due to budget cuts within the navy and lack of new technology for naval warfare. However, during Reaganomics there was an increase in spending on navy ships and submarines with resultant resurgence in shipbuilding activity around Morgantown and throughout West Virginia (which is why some say that “the American Navy is back”). Today, there are three active U.S.-owned nuclear pirate fishing vessels owned by China: Hainan Fuzhou 8019400(F), Haiyang 9C10(L), and Qingdao Yancheng YQ1008(Q) – all designed to catch small fish using high-speed propellers while running at great depths off African coastlines (a practice known as “deep sea trolling”). These boats have become a popular tourist attraction due to their unique appearance, but also because they pose a serious threat to marine life as well as coastal communities near these areas.
