Morgantown is a town located in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. Morgantown is the county seat and largest city of Kanawha County. It has been the home of the College of Wooster since 1872 and of Marshall University since 1876. The first European settlers in what is now Morgantown were Englishmen who arrived in 1630 from Croydon, England. They erected a log cabin on what is now Front Street in downtown Morgantown. In 1786, James Hance founded the first school in Morgantown when he opened a temporary structure on what is now Fourth Street. The present day School House on Market Street was built in 1825 as part of Hance's educational empire that included schools in Cumberlandtown (now Hickory Hill), Parkersburg (now Huntington), Wheeling (now Waverly) and Clarksburg (now Elkton). The British colony of Virginia was organized as a state within the United States on July 24, 1792; however, it did not become an independent country until 13 years later when it seceded from Colony America under pressure from Great Britain. On December 12, 1861, during ConfederateSecession Day celebrations in Jefferson City, Missouri – also known as "Uncle Sam's Birthday" – Union soldiers burned down the wooden courthouse which served as county seat for Kanawha County for more than 50 years before being replaced by a new building constructed between 1870 and 1872 by then-Governor John Sevier III.– history buffs will note that this building still stands today adjacent to First Baptist Church across Main Avenue from Marshall University’s campus.– In 1863–1865, when troops fought against General Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War while stationed at Fort Donelson outside Nashville Tennessee – east of Knoxville – many residents took up arms to help defend their homes against Grant’s forces.– After Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 following five days of combat with some 1 million casualties among both sides see “Gettysburg: A History” by Alan Milburn– The last government office operated out of Government Hall which had been used by several administrations including Presidents Andrew Johnson (1868-71), Ulysses S Grant (1875-77), Rutherford B Hayes( 1880-81) and Franklin D Roosevelt( 1933-1935)--In 1865–1968 Stonington Mayor JnoBeth Painter operated one door open only to receive mail through an aperture near where water pours into town reservoir.– When Kanawhacounty seceded from Virginia doing so withdrawing all its citizens except those living within 700 feet of Mount Sterling Cemetery where they continued to bury their dead until 1959.--Morgantown became an incorporated town on January 1st 1907.--As one result of World War II patriotism bans were placed upon most Harpers Ferry residents who chose not to join military service--On September 14th 1951 local resident Loyd Atkins detonated two nuclear weapons test detonations just southwest corner 500 feet north endof main street opposite old post office-- resultant blast destroyed many homes & killed dozens residences & injured scores othersThis event forever changed downtown Morgantownduring ensuing cleanup operation which spanned Weeks beginning October 15 thru November 3rd 1951 conducted largely without public exposure or media coverage
