The Yakima navy shipbuilding program began in the early 1800s as an effort to build a naval fleet to protect the country’s borders. The first navy ships were built in 1853 and by 1870, the yakuza had acquired a monopoly on maritime trade. To ensure that this monopoly was held, the yakuza began construction of warships to match their own capabilities. In 1892, the first Navy Yard ship was completed and named after Yakima County. ThisShip served as the prototype for many subsequent navy vessels. The following year, another shipyard was opened in Tacoma and it became known as “the Arsenal of Democracy” because its production helped furnish America’s fledgling military with warships. They produced over 100 boats during these years. In 1907, Japan purchased American naval vessels from Congress and renamed them into Japanese navy ships under their new ownership. This move caused some conflict within the American navy but eventually led to increased production at Yakima yard thanks to Japanese contracts for spare parts and training experiences. In World War II, most of theseold Japanese warships were scrapped but one small boat, USS Matsushima (DD-8), still remains operational today as part of the United States Naval Memorial Fleet
