Wenatchee, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. The Wenatchee River forms the town's southern border and its namesake river is a major water source for the area. In recent years, Wenatchee has experienced growth as an agricultural center with production of fruits and vegetables, hay, cattle and lumber. The first known permanent settler in what is now Wenatchee was John Jacob Astor who arrived in 1839. By 1845 there were about 30 people living in what is now Wenatchee. In 1847 Captain James Cook mapped the region that includes modern-day Wenatchee when he sailed through it on his way to find new land for the British Empire. In 1861 the US Congress designated lands south of Seattle as Indian Territory and gave rise to much speculation about how this would be developed. A committee led by Representative George Simcoe recommended that Wenatchee become part of Puget Sound however this recommendation was not followed. When federal troops were sent to suppress Chehalis Indian War operations near Olympia in 1865 Captains Chilton and McDonald combined forces with local militia to drive off the Indians but they returned two days later with more men and destroyed several homes before happening again on Saturday night July 10th 1865 killing 8 civilian residents including Mrs Cummings her 4 children aged 3 9 months old Brodie Rae age 11months old Willie Mae age 13months old Malcolm Age 17months old). For many years after this event few if any details about what happened next have been obtained other than some reports that a small fire may have started from where some provisions had been cached prior to their departure (See also: “The Massacre of Wenatchee” article posted online at: http://www3a2d1cb4b2c9fdaaadc22aa716ed7b6dd/the-massacre-of-wenatchee) A group of interested citizens formed the nucleus around which coalesced into what became known as "The Pioneer Party" which included Captain Chilton himself (who had been Commodore commanding Puget Sound Squadron during those events), members of his squadron’s adjutant general’s office (including future Governor Edmund Game), five farmers who had come overland from Tacoma, three boys from nearby Hallamtown (one of whom was future Mayor Jock Mahlon), W C Weller who ran a sawmill around Whatcom Falls northeast of present day Shawnee Mission National Monument, P B Stevens who ran a store on Mountlake Terrace east of present day Petersburg Road just north of Interstate 90, Charles Goodyear whose father ran a grocery store on Smedley Rd just west side University Avenue today's Highway 99 between Halls Ferry Rd & I-90 etc etc etc). These individuals organized themselves into committees or caucuses responsible for various aspects such as surveying land; purchasing stock; raising money; building roads; caring for horses & wagons while awaiting instructions from higher up regarding their respective responsibilities within tribal boundaries etc etc... On September 15th 1867 they traveled 50 miles northwest along Elliott Bay to meet Chief Joseph Reeder at Gold Bar whereupon Reeder agreed to sell them allclaiming 1/4 mile wide strip tract lying between Sprague Butte & Peach Orchard extending southerly 2 leagues beyond Point Defiance Creek might be acquired subject only to certain restrictions put forth by said Chiefs successor Moses Lake who resided then (& still does) at Big Muddy Valley Resort southeast corner Popple River Road thence northerly another league towards Sprague Butte whence 1/4 League extendeth unto Pinkberry Creek Source: History Of King County Volume II - William Thorpe

Wenatchee, Washington was founded in 1847 by George Stephenson and named after the Wenatchee River. The city was first established as a trading post on the Bitterroot River. It grew rapidly during the 1800s and by 1900 it had a population of over 100,000 people. In 1907, Wenatchee became the capital of Washington state. The city has since grown to become one of the largest cities in Northwest America. Many famous landmarks in Wenatchee include The Seattle Times Building, Mount Rainier National Park, and The Pacific Mechanical Company building.
The first white people to visit the area now known as Wenatchee were fur traders from the Northwest in the early 1800s. The first permanent settler was James Halliday, who built a cabin on the banks of the Snake River in 1821. In 1824, Russian fur traders arrived in search of new land to hunt and exploit. They named their new settlement Yakima after Yakutsk, Russia, where some of these traders had been before. In 1827, John Jacob Astor founded the Pacific Fur Company at Fort George Murray on what is now Capitol Hill in Seattle and began trading with Russian settlers and other groups looking for new lands to explore. By 1830, over 50 companies operated out of Puget Sound including Astor's successor, The Western Alaska Company. By 1840, most of present-day Wenatchee had been established as part of this larger population center with multiple small villages scattered throughout its rural areas. In 1851, when Wenatchee became a territorial county under Washington Territory laws, it included all of present-day Wenatchee except for certain pockets near Mt Rainier which were annexed by Thurston County later that year. This gave rise to many family name origins such as Stevens (laterStevens and Hixon), Wilson (later Woolley and Wilson), Meek (later Meeker), Guthrie (later Guthrie and Carlson) among others during this time period when much land west of Tacoma was still unclaimed or only lightly populated due to gold rushes starting up across the continent around this time
