The name Wenatchee is from the Chinook language meaning "calming place." In 1889, an employee training school called Western Technical Institute (WTKI) was founded here; it closed its doors in 1984 but remains a popular tourist attraction with exhibits about ancient Native American life and culture housed within its walls remnants of original buildings dating back to 1862-1864).
