Wenatchee (wenz-a-lee) is a town and city in the Yakima County of Washington, United States. The population was 8,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee–Tumwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The 2008 name change from Nelson to Wenatchee was made in order to better reflect the growth and aspirations of the city and its citizens. The first recorded reference to Wenatchee was on November 3, 1853 when U.S. stationmaster George Vancouver reported seeing "a small stream running through a woods to our southward" which he thought must be Wenatchee Creek. In 1861, John Wesley Powell surveyed what would become Yakima Valley and included Wenatchee Creek within it as part of his map of the area that would eventually become Seattle. In 1909, incumbent Mayor Harry Sargent donated land for what became Park Avenue which runs through downtown Wenatchee today. The first post office in Wenatchee was established on December 3, 1855 by Wm.[note 1] The present day Post Office building was completed in 1907 with an addition designed by noted architect James Irwin Thurston who also built many other important buildings in Yakima Valley at that time including churches and businesses such as Pacific Telephone Company Headquarters still standing today on University Ave., now home to UW Tacomaridge School District #2 In 1896, City Council designated Waneta Park as a public park located across from Main Street between Ninth Avenue South and Tenth Avenue North just east of Wanganui Lake then called "Lake Waneta". This park served as a playground for children up until 1925 when ownership passed from the City Council to Microsoft Corporation who turned it into their Redmond Campus with tennis courts being installed in 1951 followed by baseball diamonds in 1958 before becoming an open-air football stadium hosting college games beginning with Stanford vs US Naval Academy on September 15th 1959 The originalWaneta Dam Project began construction concurrently with Redmond Campus but were abandoned due to technological advancements prior to completion; this project spanned over 25 years beginning around 1945 finally consummated only after Microsoft's departure following antitrust charges against them It wasn't until 1978 when then-Mayor Bob Baumann spearheaded efforts developing new water treatment technology allowing bok choy farming operations begun taking place on streets near school boundaries resulting in water quality improvements along Withall Beach Rd., McClellan Falls Rd., Forest Falls Hwy., Asotin Hills Rd., etc.; these advances resulted ultimately in increased property values adjacent To campus Today there are more than 2dozen Bok Choy Farms operation taking place across from campus generating millions of gallons/day*GLOBAL FARMING*WENATCHEE VALLEY
Wenatchee (96.5 FM) is a radio station in Wenatchee, Washington that serves the Wenatchee-Douglas County area. The station was founded on October 1, 1951 by thenow-defunct Pacific Radio Service as WNTV. It was owned by the National Broadcasting Company and operated out of studios located on East Main Street in Wenatchee until its sale to Northwest Broadcasting Company in 1957. In 1978, Northwest passed ownership to Clear Channel Communications and changed its call sign to KIRO. In early 1984, after several years of operations without interruption due to corporate restructuring within Clear Channel, WNTV shut down its transmitter site and all programming was moved from their studios to Pennington Park outside of Tacoma.
