The town was founded by Huckleberry Finn and his family in 1847 as a logging camp on the banks of the Washougal River. The first post office was established in 1848 and the first store opened in 1850. Washougal became an agricultural community with corn, beans, potatoes, and wheat being main crops. In 1907, washougal built its first school on a tract of land that it donated to the town. In 1938, it merged with neighboring East Wenatchee to form one single municipality. Today, Washougal is known for its natural attractions including both waterfalls and mountaintops; its wide variety of cultural experiences; and its rich history which includes pivotal moments during America's westward expansion.

Washougal, Washington is a town in Kittitas County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,843 at the 2010 census. Washougal is home to the Kittitas Correctional Facility and the Kittitas Regional Airport. The area that now makes up Washougal was settled by people of Native American descent beginning in the late 18th century. In 1853, the first post office was established in Washougal and it remained in operation until 1907. The community's name comes from nearby Wapanomish River which became known as "The Wash" due to its high water-table levels during times of rainstorms. Washougal had its start as an agricultural community near present day Olympia. A sawmill built on Main Street began operating in 1854 and continued operation until 1896; it remains the only active sawmill west of Seattle today. By 1860, other farmers had arrived and started businesses such as a livery stable and harness shop. In 1865, a school was erected on what is now First AvenueNW and Main Street; it operated for about 20 years before being closed down due to financial difficulties. Starting around 1870, small homesteads were constructed by settlers within what would later become Washougal Township boundaries; these sub-divisions remain today but are not counted among the townships themselves. In 1882, there were 2 churches existing in Washoughal – St Andrews Presbyterian Church (later renamed Mount Rainier Presbyterian Church) and Methodist Episcopal Zion Chapel – as well as 11 residences or farmssteads with a total population of 148 people living within what is now Kittitas County government limits whenWAshougal Township formed from part of Kittitas County on March 3rd 1889 By 1901 there were only 5 residences remaining within town limits while overall population had declined to just 54 people primarily due toaperiodic epidemics like Smallpox which killed many residents). However this did not last long as by 1916 all except one residence had been replaced by housing developments including 9 stores/neighborhood schools (5Methodist Episcopal Zion Churches), 4 churches/temples (St Andrews Presbyterian Church & Mount Rainier Presbyterian Church), 2 granges (Anaconda Wesleyan Methodist Episcopal church & White Sands Wesleyan Methodist Episcopal church) & 4 wells (). Additionally there were numerous new industry beginnings such as a foundry that produced cannons for use by law enforcement agencies (& later also artillery), breweries (2 local products: Tilford’s Hard Cider & Phelps Chocolates) & lumberyards producing both shipbuilding timbers needed for naval vessels&llumber used for constructing public buildings across Puget Sound including Tacoma Arsenal(active 1910-1914). All this activity while general enrollment at local high schools plummeted from over 900 students per grade group in 1900 to just 53 students per grade group by 1916 . In 1924 Cascade Lumber Company moved their mills from Coeur d'Alene Idaho into unincorporated Kittitas County following prohibition which forced them out of business Some associated with this company include Harry Carrington who purchasedCoeur d'Alene mill site after prohibition ended operations 1912-1920 also Ralph Waldo Emerson who served on board Cascade Lumber Co., President 1920-1924
