This system was known as "the Puget Sound Railway." In 1904, residents voted to name their city after General George Washburne because he had sponsored their incorporation as a town in 1903. The citizens built a City Hall (now installed inside the Multnomah County Courthouse), which still stands today; they named it for General George Washburne because they thought he would be more likely than anyone else to support their new town since he had been so instrumental in its development
