At that time, Washougal was a small farming community located on the banks of the Columbia River. The town was founded byMenominee Indians and named after an early settler, John Washougal. In 1851, a group of men from Oregon traveling through Washington Territory decided to visit Menominee Indian Country and saw an opportunity to trade goods for horses and scalps. They were not familiar with the region and had no idea what they were getting themselves into when they arrived at Washougal. John Washougal soon realized he needed help to run his business and started trading goods with the men from Oregon. He became friends with several of them and began helping out as much as he could. By 1861, Washougal had developed a large farm which he used to store goods destined for Oregon. He also built a small mill which ground flour for his friends in Oregon. In 1865, John Washougall died suddenly at age 73 years old while running his farmstead office complex near present day Council Bluffs, Iowa. His death created a void in the local business world which was filled quickly by his son-in-law James Henson Sr., who ran the farmstead until 1971 when it passed along to his grandson James Henson Jr.. After James Jr.'s passing, control over the farmstead passed back to Menominee Tribe members through Vitalie Smith who currently manages it on behalf of Tribal membership Through their interactions with other tribes throughout North America, Menominee Indians learned about Native customs related to gift giving4 and found ways to include traditional items such as baskets or lamps within their gifts4 This system survived until contact between European settlers and Native Americans ended around 18005 A number of these gifts survive today6 Some are even still being given today7 among others is a basket made from willow branches dyed red ( typical Christmas Gifts)

Washougal is a small town in Columbia County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is the eastern terminus of the Washougal–Kitsap County Line. Washougal is located on the south bank of the Klamath River. The first people to live in what would become Washougal arrived by boat in 1847 from Oregon. They were led by David Lane and his brother Josephine Lane. The tide had been low when they landed so they built rafts and floated their goods downriver until they arrived at a place called "Moccasin Lake." There they built a cabin and raised families until 1851 when gold was discovered near Gold Beach on the other side of Moccasin Lake. As miners began to arrive in greater numbers, the Lanes decided to move their family back eastward into what would become Washougal. In 1870, David Lane's son John married Julia Hildebrandt who had also come overland from Oregon that year with her father-in-law Jacob Thorpe. The couple founded a business selling groceries and Other sundries from their home on High Street in what became known as "the old mill district." They continued this business until 1880 when it burned down; however, John Lane rebuilt it and continued operations until 1907 when he sold it to Julius Rosenwald for $2 million dollars ($ Today’s value). In 1907 there were only about 30 people living in what would become Washougal; however, within 5 years that number had increased to 400 due to new housing developments being constructed along Klamath Highway (Route 99) which ran through town center. Within 10 years more than 1,000 people lived here including many farmers who grew corn and wheat. By 1930 most residents were employed in industry or agriculture but there remained some 20 residential homes still standing today along Kramath Highway (route 99). When World War II started most residents left for military service but a few chose to stay behind because of economic opportunities available outside of town limits such as work at nearby aluminum plants or working for Boeing Company Headquarters at Moses Lake Airport (now Renton International Airport). After the war local businesses thrived as manufacturing resumed but by 1970 only 10 percent of residents still worked closely with their local businesses while 90 percent relied on government services such as health care, education and welfare assistance. Many felt that too much government regulation was limiting growth while others saw benefits such as better transportation access or easier access to federal jobs outside of town limits which led some citizens to secede from Washougall during the 1980s over concerns about loss of control over municipal functions typical during open- wounds settlements like gentrification movements where profits trump social justice values
