Walla Walla, Washington is home to the first police department in the United States. The department was founded on December 6, 1881, and was named for General George Armstrong Custer. The first officers of the Walla Walla Police Department were men from New York City. In 1907, the department moved to its current location at Broadway and Second streets. Walla Walla, Washington is a small town located in the U.S. state of Washington. The population was 7,515 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-Tumwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Walla Walla" means "the place where the willows grow." The first permanent settler in what is now Walla Walla County was David Wilkes, who named it for his home country, Wales. He and his family arrived in 1799 from Portsmouth, England on the ship "Dolphin". In 1847, John Cushing established a ferry service between Puget Sound and Olympia that became very important for traveling to and from agricultural areas in centralWashington. Cushing also built a sawmill on the site of present-day Moses Lake which continued to be used until 1910;early mills were built close to lakes so that lumber could be transported easily by boat or railroad. In 1907, Swedish immigrant August Ljungqvist founded an ethanol refinery at nearby Anacortes after finding crude oil available only near Seattle and other major cities due to natural gas restrictions set by Congress at that time. Ljungqvist's refinery has long been one of America's leading producers of ethanol fuels but ceased operations in 2006 following environmental concerns over its production practices

Walla Walla, Washington is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Washington and seat of the Walla Walla County government. The population was 79,893 as of 2018[1] making it the third most populous city in Washington after Seattle and Tacoma. It is also one of the largest cities in Oregon and has a population larger than that of Portland, Oregon combined. The original town at the confluence of the Columbia River and Snake River was founded by Captain George Vancouver on July 3, 1792 as Fort Duwamish. The name "Walla Walla" was given to it by General James Klamath because he saw a clump of trees standing tall against a wall near its mouth on the Columbia River. The first white settler was George Morrison who built his log cabin on what is now Harrison Beach on November 6, 1819. He named it "Walla Walla". In 1824 John Day established what is now Yakima Valley about 20 miles east from where Morrison had located his settlement; this area became known as Daytown orYakima Village due to its proximity to Mount Rainier National Park. In 1848, when gold was discovered at Gold Creek in Whatcom County, settlers began arriving from all over western Washington Territory seeking ore and land for farming purposes; they called their new community "Gold Hill". When Gold Hill proved unable to yield significant amounts of gold ore, developers petitioned Congress for airmen's Landing (later renamed Fort Douglas) along Puget Sound so miners could be transported safely back upriver without accompagnied personnel during strikes or other emergencies; this request was granted on March 4, 1850[2]. At Fort Douglas various mills were erected including: an woolen yarn factory begun in 1851 by J C Chasen; an oil refinery started in 1863 by W H Cooley; an ice cream factory opened in 1865 by F Debs & Sons[3]; and an bakery beginning in 1870 by E D Bacon[4]. The first post office at Fort Douglas opened on December 13, 1850.[5] By 1861Fort Douglas had become home to 1st Regiment United States Infantry,[6] which served with distinction during both American Civil War (1861-1865) and World War I (1914-1918). This regiment lost no men but sustained many injuries during combat operations around Puget Sound region
Walla Walla was founded in 1859 by the Malaspina people and named for their own mountain, Walla Walla. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s as settlers arrived from all over the Northwest Territory. In 1884, the United States government made Walla Walla a city and it has since grown into a highly populated community with a vibrant cultural life.
