Walla Walla, Washington is a small town in the U.S. state of Washington. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-East Wenatchee area and is situated on the east bank of the Columbia River between East Wenatchee and Moses Lake. The name "Walla Walla" is derived from Chief Seattle's aboriginal language meaning "the great river." The first Europeans to visit this area were fur traders and missionaries who came here in 1811 and 1812 as part of a group led by Captain John Cushing. After many failed attempts, they finally located a river crossing in what is now Walla Walla County on November 5, 1814 by Lieutenant George Vancouver while exploring the Strait of Georgia for North America. The area that would become Walla Walla was settled primarily by Native Americans beginning with the Wanapum people in about 1790s AD. By 1800, most Native Americans had died from disease or violence caused by European settlers; however, some continued to live here until after World War II when white flight began to take place throughout much of North America due to economics and social changes brought about by World War II displacement policies targeting Japanese-Americans living behind enemy lines during World War II. The first Europeans to arrive in Walla Walla were the Metlakatla people. The area was part of the Yaletown Reservation and was known as "Hoh Island" because of its high elevation. The first white man to ever set foot in the area was Captain John Colville, who landed on Hoh Island in 1795. In 1805, a group of British Loyalists led by Major General David Astor built a fort on what is now called Point Defiance. They named it Fort Astoria after their ship, HMS Astrea. In 1812, gold was discovered at La Push and soon there were settlers arriving from all over Washington Territory. In 1816, the Yakima tribe ceded their land toWalla Walla County for development purposes. By 1830, many citizens ofWalla Walla had come to live there permanently. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General George Custer's army invaded Oregon and found evidence of gold near Mount Hood. He decided to explore this new discovery instead of trying to fight against the Union army and quickly ran out of food and supplies near his base at Battle Rock Creek Canyon. His force became very depleted and he ordered his men not to retreat but march headlong into battle against overwhelming odds without backup or reinforcements. Instead they surrendered with minimal losses when they realized that they could not hope to win against such overwhelming numbers any other way
