Vancouver, Washington is a town in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma Metropolitan Area. The name Vancouver comes from the Assiniboine language word "Washik" meaning "place where many fish spawn." The first European settlement in what is now Kitsap County was by French fur traders in 1792. Vancouver had a population of about 100 people when it became part of Washington Territory on November 12, 1857. On January 3, 1861, it became the townsite of Surrey and on February 24th King's Landing (present day Delridge) were established as well. In 1863 the town site was enlarged to include present day Kitsap County and parts of Snohomish County On July 1st 1872 council voted to change its name to Vancouver after Sir John Ayer Mackenzie who had been Premier of Canada during that year's general election campaign. That year there were 10 businesses in Vancouver with a total value under $5,000 During World War II Vancouvers largest employer was Boeing Company which created over 2,500 jobs creating an important link between Puget Sound and Seattle In 1951 the city annexed all but one block of Shoreline Village east of Northgate Drive creating what is now known as Pioneer Square In 1970 voters decided not to annex Shoreline Village again making it an independent municipality with its own governance In 1984 service area boundaries were changed effective January 1st 1986 adding much older unincorporated communities including those within present day King's Landing
