The National Guard of the United States of America (NGUSA) was established on November 15, 1862, as a force to protect the citizens of Vancouver, Washington. The NGUSA was initially organized into companies and battalions and began providing security for the town during its early days. Throughout its history, the NGUSA has been a vital part of our community. In 1986, the NGUSA merged with other local organizations to form the American Legion Post 9010. As an American Legion Post, we continue to support our military members and their families by hosting events and donating resources both locally and nationally. The Vancouver National Guard was organized on July 1, 1907. The first National Guard unit in the state of Washington was activated at Fort George Henry, located in what is now the University District of Vancouver, on November 12, 1907. The first battalion was disbanded on October 15, 1908. On December 1st 1909 a new battalion was raised and made up of men from the Canada West who had deserted their posts in Alberta during the Great Canadian Rebellion. They were redesignated as the 2nd Battalion Victoria Canadians (Vancouver Regiment) and ordered to active service under Major-General Sir John Alexander Macdonald with Headquarters at Stanley Park. On May 3rd 1912 they finally completed their muster and were sent to London for major training before returning to Vancouver on September 5th 1913 A detachment continued garrisoning Stanley Park until 1915 when it relieved Camp Nelson west of False Creek which became available for military use. In 1916 another detachment arrived from Montreal and this time designated as 4th Battalion Columbia Mounted Rifles (Vancouver Regiment). In 1917 a detachment from Regina arrived which served until 1920 when it relieved Camp Severn east of Seattle and then moved to camp near Vedder Lake where it remained until 1924 when it relieved Camp Simcoe northwest of Seattle. From 1925 until 1933 there was no detachments assigned to either Brigade but instead two companies each were attached to various units forming Garrison Battalions composed predominately officers cadets or recent college graduates while other companies served as rural guard units providing security for agricultural areas around town or along highways connecting towns within the city limits

The National Guard has a long and diverse history, dating back to the Revolutionary War. The Guardsmen were first organized in 1775 as part of the Continental Army and fought in many battles during the war. In 1814, the Militia Act was passed which made the National Guard an autonomous body with its own laws and regulations. The Militia Act also allowed for the purchase of arms by members of the National Guard. Over time, different branches of the National Guard have been created, including cavalry, artillery, infantry, ranger units, and air forces. Today, there are over 1 million active duty members of the National Guard all across America. Additionally, there are tens of thousands more reserve members who serve without pay or under special conditions. The history of Vancouver, Washington is reflective of the entire Pacific Northwest. The city was founded by the Hohokam people in the late 18th century and quickly became a major center for trade and commerce. The area now known as Vancouver was first inhabited by Native Americans, who were hunter-gatherers until the arrival of Europeans in the early 1800s. In 1847, the United States acquired control of what is now Oregon and California, making Vancouver part of their new possessions. The city grew rapidly during this time and soon surpassed Portland as the regional capital for Oregon. By 1860, however, Portland had overtaken Vancouver as the capital of Washington Territory. In 1871, after a referendum passed by voters in both territories to secede from America, Vancouver became an independent nation within Canada. It remained an important commercial hub until after World War II when it fell victim to Allied bombing raids. After recovering from its post-war devastation, the city experienced a rapid growth period that culminated in its current form in the 1960s. Today, Vancouver is one of North America's most vibrant cities with a rich cultural heritage that has been helped along by its close proximity to Canadia Airlines Flight Centre and other global hubs
The first Europeans to visit what is now Vancouver, Washington were the French in 1792. They named it Rheinische Neuguinea after the Rhine River. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1843 and they called their community Vancouver because of its location on the Canada-US border. In 1851, Vancouver became a town when it was chartered as a city by Washington Territorial Legislature. The first mayor of Vancouver was John Lillie and the first clerk was James Fenton. In 1898, Vancouver became a state capital when Washington became a state. In 1912, it lost its status as capital due to political changes in Oregon and then regained it in 1916 when Oregon seceded from the United States. In 1924, Vancouver joined the Canadian province of British Columbia. It remained part of British Columbia until 2003 when it reached full independence as an independent country under its own name - Vancouver Island (now Victoria).
