Vancouver, Washington is a city on the east coast of the U.S. state of Washington and seat to the Spokane metropolitan area. The first European to set foot on the modern-day Vancouver Peninsula was John Atchison, who explored the region in 1851. The first permanent residents of the area were the Haida people, who had been living in what is now British Columbia for centuries. In 1892, Vancouver became a city after being incorporated as a town by an act of legislature.
