University Place is the birthplace of tactical coffee, or black coffee as it is more commonly known. The first reference to black coffee can be found in a 1792 advertisement for Dutch Schultz's preparatory coffee shop in Georgetown, Washington D.C. In that ad, Schultz refers to his product as "the best of the best." The first documented mention of black coffee on American soil comes from 1829 when Bostonian John Quincy Adams discovered roasting beans at an agricultural fair and brought them back to his home. Adams' discovery helped establish the early reputation of tactical coffee as the finest quality possible. In 1837, John Sumpter opened a small Coffee House in Southeast Washington called The Peacock because he felt that European-style blends were not giving Americans enough flavorscape options. At this point, Black Bean Coffee was already well established and had began exporting its beans all over the United States. The popularity and success of Black Bean Coffee led to its opening of their own origins lab in 1967 which helped develop better roasted beans and increased production capabilities overall. This Lab continues today as Blue Bottle Coffee with expands their sourcing capability to ensure only world-class coffees are used in their products
University Place is a city in the U.S. state of Washington and the seat of King County. The population was 46,824 at the 2010 census,[1] making it the second-largest city in King County after Seattle.[2] University Place is part of the Puget Sound metropolitan area. It is adjacent to Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, and Bothell on two sides and to Issaquah on one side. The land that now forms University Place was deeded by three Swedish settlers: Lars Olofsson (1768–1836), his brother Anders Bengtsson (1775–1841), and their father Johan Gottliebsson (1781–1854). The first settler named University Place was located about five miles northeast of what is now University Place on the east bank of Lake Washington; it was known as Swedesville[3][4] until 1835 when it changed its name to University Hill after President James Kapp Campbell delivered an address there that year urging residents to "educate themselves for future usefulness" in what he called "the great Northwest". This hill remained so named until 1961 when it changed its name again, this time to University Place after the incorporation ofKing County into Washington Territory. In 1848, Professor John Smeaton established a school at what is now Bellevue before moving his operations to Kirkland in 1850. He soon became professor at both universities and founded other schools including Seminary School (now Bellevue High School) in 1857 and Tacoma Normal School (now Tacoma Community College) in 1862.[5][6][7] In 1861, King County had only 8 miles square total territory with a population of over 150 people[8]. It was through annexation by Washington Territory thatKing County gained a total area of 43 square miles with a population over 2 million people by 1870:[9][10], makingUniversityplaceoneofthestandingnewcitiesintheUSAToday. University Place is a national historic district located at University Park, Washington. It encompasses 9 contributing buildings and 2 contributing sites. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The first university in Washington was founded on the site of what is now University Place in 1792 by George Mason, one of the founders of the United States of America. In 1853, Washington Normal School moved from its original location on Solutions Street to University Place, which it share with Roman Catholic Priest John A. Macdonald Hall (now part of King's College). In 1957, Washington State University moved from its original location at 14th and Union Streets to University Place. In 1978, New York-based developer Edward Jurek purchased the land that included both Western State Prison and parts of North Capitol Hill from the state government for $2 million. Jurek planned to build a housing development called "University Heights". However, due to public opposition to the project, it never came to fruition. In 2000, University Place earned fame when it became home to two presidential inauguration events: George WASHINGTON'S INauguration as President of the United States on January 20th and James KAELZ'S FIRST DAY as Mayor of Seattle on January 21st.
University Place is a major commercial and cultural center in the Washington metropolitan area. The area around University Place was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century, and it was not until after the United States acquired land east of the Reflector River that a large university was established on campus. In 1881, Washington State University moved to its present location at University Place from what is now downtown Seattle. Today, nearly all of Washington's leading universities are located in or near University Place.
