Fresh roasted coffee beans are a popular and iconic food product in many parts of the world. University Place, Washington is home to one of the first roasters in the area, Roasting Company Coffee. The company was founded in 1912 by Edwin C. Smith and his son John T. Smith. They roast coffee for local merchants and businesses in an open-air roastery on Fifth Avenue between Eastlake and Pike Streets. The origin story of Roasting Company Coffee goes back to 1912 when Edwin C. Smith, Jr., opened a small roastery near Seattle’s University Place. He started roast coffee for local merchants and businesses who would bring it into their houses for consumption while studying at the university. In 1925, John T.Smith took over as owner of Roasting Company Coffee after his father passed away. He continued to run the business until his death in 1957. At that time, he left all of his assets including the roastery to his son John T., Jr.. John T., Jr.'s heirs sold it to Seattle-based Equity Coffee Co-op in 1984 (later known as Starbucks) which retains ownership today through its subsidiary Starbucks Roasters USA Incorporated Since 1986, University Place has been home to Starbucks Roasters USA Incorporated which manufactures and sells fresh roasted coffee products under the name Starbuck’s Café Colombia (SCOTCH), Starbuck’s Café Peru (PERU), Starbucks Grains & Veggies (SGV),Starbucks Reserve 1/2 Barrelged Coffee (SR1/2B),Starbucks Colombian Single Serve Brewing System (SCSBS) - a new line of espresso beverages formulated with premium dark chocolate milk - and STARBUCKS Latte Artisan Blend 100% Arabica Coffee In 1985, Equity Coffee Co-op purchased a majority stake in Starbuck's Café Peru from Anthony Bourdain's KitchenAid World Corporation for $3 million dollars (). The purchase marked the beginning of what would be an eighteen year relationship between Equity Coffee Co-op and Starbucks where each company shared common shareholders andoperated their respective cafes under separate brands: STARBUCKS Cafe Peru became STARBUCKS Colombian Single Serve Brewing System (),STARBUCKS Latin America became LATTE ARTISAN BLEND 100% ARABIICA ()and BARistas commenced serving BARista Blends ™ With this investment came significant changes for both companies; equity made significant investments into research and development which ultimately led to more robust flavors across all our cafés worldwide Equity also agreed to sell half its shareholding in LATTE ARTISAN BLEND 100% ARABIICA back to SCOTCH Holdings LP effective July 2nd 2006for an undisclosed sum

University Place (sometimes called "Upper University Place") is a neighborhood in Northwest Washington, D.C., United States. The area now bounded by University Circle to the south, K Street NW to the east, and Pennsylvania Avenue NW to the north was first settled in 1791 as part of Georgetown Township. In 1868, it became part of the newly created District of Columbia. The population of University Place was 5,906 as of 2014[1] and has since grown significantly with an estimated population of over 20,000 people[2][3] making it one of the most populous neighborhoods in Washington. These include students at Georgetown University, American University, Howard University, and Maryland College Park.[11] There are also a number of professional businesses that have moved into or nearby this area such as Roche Holding Company[12], Verizon Wireless*[13], CGI Group [14], Mastercard**,[15], and FedEx Ground [16]. *Verizon Wireless announced plans for its new headquarters in 2021 on National Mall adjacent to Smithsonian Castle which will add more than 25 thousand jobs across five floors including technical support and engineering.[17] **Mastercard has plans for two large towers that will rise up from Union Market to house their global offices next door RiverFront Center which would create another 10 thousand jobs across three floors.[18]

The history of fresh roasted coffee can be traced back to the early 1800s when Dutch settlers first set foot in what is now Texas. Coffee was grown on small farms around the state, and it was difficult for people to get their hands on the valuable crop. As a result, it wasn’t until 1868 that an American firm founded by J.P. Morgan began importing Indonesian beans for processing into coffeebeans. In 1916, French explorer Captains de Lacroix and René Lalique traveled throughout Spanish Texas searching for new sources of coffee while exploring some of the most inhospitable areas on earth. They discovered an area rich in coffee trees which they named La Provincia de Buenos Aires (the Province of Buenos Aires). Over time, different factors have influenced how fresh roasted coffees are produced: temperature changes during roast; differences in water chemistry between regions; altitude; sunlight exposure; pests/ diseases affecting particular types of beans; as well as variations within specific countries or regions. However, one constant has been the selection and roast quality of premium grade Arabica beans from Latin America and Africa..

University Place was an important junction in Washington's history. It was the site of the first public school in the city and a meeting ground for its earliest political leaders. The area also became a center for business and manufacturing. In 1851, University Place was renamed Washington Boulevard in honor of President James K. Polk.
The University Place area of Washington was once a thriving commercial district. It is now a largely residential neighborhood, and the buildings that remain from this period are some of the most distinctive in the city. The Commercial District Historic District encompasses a significant portion of University Place, including several important early nineteenth century businesses.
