University Place, located in the heart of Washington D.C., is one of the most important and popular neighborhoods in the city. It is home to a variety of businesses and cultural attractions, as well as some of the best public education in the area. University Place has been proverbially called "the intellectual capital of America." The neighborhood was founded in 1824 by General James K. Polk and his wife Julia Grant, who were looking for a place to raise their children after they divorced. The Grants purchased 8 acres (3 ha) from John Adams on which they built what became known as Trinity Plantation. In 1830, they donated another acre (1 km2) to become University Place Cemetery. The name first appeared on a map in 1835 when Washingtonian merchants named it after George Washington's Mount Vernon estate near Mount Vernon Station on the Potomac River. In 1841, President James Ketchum persuaded Congress to appropriate $10,000 for lay out and development inside then-District of Columbia limits; this led to what is now University Place being designated as part of Washington Territory within Kansas City District (now Missouri). As university land increased in value throughout American history – including during World War II when much military research activity took place at nearby Ft Meade – University Place saw growth especially during the early 20th century. One example was when prominent architect Edward Hopper moved into an apartment building at 6th and G Streets NW in 1916 after leaving his previous office building at 101 Constitution Avenue NW with its sweeping colonnaded facade that had once been described by writer Edmund Wilson as "a work of art."[1] During World War II many aspects related to military research took place at nearby Ft Meade which included producing radar systems used for night bombing raids against Japan;[2] chemical weapons research took place here also including studies on Agent Orange;[3] and those working on Project Paperclip developing new methods for extracting plutonium from uranium ore were based here including scientist Julian Huxley.[4][5] However while many buildings still remain standing today such as 6th & G StreetsNW apartment building where architect EdwardHopper lived until 1916,[6][7] more recent construction has taken place mainly along McPherson Road NE with few remaining original buildings remaining such as Trinity Plantation Estate originally built by James Thompson on 4 miles (6 km) east side of present day University Place between First Street SW and Second Street SE

University Place was founded in 1851 as the Washington Female Seminary by Rev. Dr. Samuel Chase and his wife Deborah. The college first opened its doors in 1852, but it wasn’t until 1861 that University Place became a reality after the passage of the Dred Scott decision which denied African Americans their full citizenship. In 1865, University Place was renamed for George Washington after he became President of the United States. The college continued to grow and soon had a library, archives, and other facilities. In 1916, University Place merged with Puget Sound College to form the present-day UW system. Today, University Place is one of the most important educational institutions in Washington State and has helped shape many aspects of our state’s history including its current location on Lake Union waterfront and its rich cultural heritage.
The University Place Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The district includes a number of historically significant buildings, including the Washington State Capitol and the first United States Post Office in Seattle.
