University Place is an affluent neighborhood in Northwest Washington, D.C. It is bordered by the Anacostia River on the north, Takoma Park on the east, Georgetown on the south, and Smithsonian National Museum of American History and Museum of Natural history on the west. University Place was once a working-class district that has since become one of the most upscale neighborhoods in all of Washington. The neighborhood is known for its high quality schools and its close proximity to many embassies and government buildings. The name "University Place" first appeared in 1848 when President James K. Polk named it after George Washington's former home in Alexandria, Virginia. At that time University Hill was much more rundown than University Place and there were no colleges or universities located there. In 1870, Congress appropriated $5,000 for a school at what would eventually become University Place. The school opened in 1871 as Union School but soon became known as Howard Academy due to its connections with local wealthy families such as John Atherton (founder of Jardine & Atherton) and Augustus Kelley (owner of Kelley's Bazaar). In 1876 Congress passed a bill authorizing creation of two other universities: Columbian College (now George Mason University) and Catholic Normal School (later Saint Mary's College). In 1907, University Place was annexed by Arlington Heights which made it part of Arlington County. However, because University Place lay within Ward 7b until 1965 - which coincided with social segregation practices - it remained largely white until well into the 21st century despite some heavy investment from black homeowners throughout this period. African Americans formed their own community called "University Village", which grew up around Mount Vernon Hospital between 1967-1968 following riots that occurred throughout inner-city Washington during this time period; however much progress has been made since then withstanaly increasing diversity among residents including university professorships open to both races In recent years large developers have begun moving into northwest D.C., creating new areas such as Quincy Market/Bellevue Hill near Dupont Circle while also opening up properties along Maryland Road NW near Capitol Hill to provide even more high end housing options for students across all demographics Recent development also includes Trump International Hotel adjacent to ULI headquarters

By 1800, over one hundred thousand Africans had been enslaved in America. While some plantations continued to produce coffee until the early 20th century, most plantations were closed by 1845. Coffee production peaked during the late 19th century but declined thereafter due to technological advances and new market opportunities for other crops such as cocoa and cotton.
