Army gift history at University Place began in 1861 when the first Washington Infantry Regiment was organized. The regiment was named for the University of Virginia, where many of its members had been educated. At that time, the University Place Armory was the only arsenal in town and it functioned as a training ground for the Washington Infantry Regiment. The regiment participated in the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865. During that time, it served in several battles including Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. In 1865, the Washington Infantry Regiment disbanded and its members were eventually absorbed into other units. The Army gift history in University Place, Washington goes back to the early 1800s. The first military outpost in what is now Washington was established by Captain George Vancouver on July 14, 1775. The original fort was built at Point Defiance Island and used as a trading post between Spain and Britain. It was abandoned in 1804 after the U.S. bought it from Spain for $5,000. In 1825, the Army erected Fort Stevens on Mount Vernon Hill as part of its new Proving Grounds east of Washington City. The fort served as an artillery battery during the American Civil War and also played a role in Native American negotiations leading up to the Treaty of Peace Treaty of 1846. In 1862, Fort Stevens was decommissioned and converted into barracks for the First Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry under Major General Nathaniel Lyon. After the Civil War, Fort Stevens became an arsenal belonging to the Department of Ordnance until it was placed within District No. 5 of Military Affairs in 1865 when that organization was redesignated as Defense Department headquarters. The arsenal continued functioning as an armory until 1898 when it reverted back to civilian control under ownership by Naval Intelligence Bureau before being closed down permanently by Secretary Elihu Root on November 1, 1898 due to budget cuts announced by President McKinley that year.. -In 1922, District No 5 (Military Affairs) merged into Defense Department and armory operations were transferred from Naval Intelligence Bureau to newly created Directorate of Air Warfare which remained inactive until October 1953 when Air Force command assumed responsibility for all Wright-Patterson AFB armories including University Place Armory
University Place is a community of approximately 100,000 people in the Northwest District of Washington. It comprises a mix of residential, commercial, and institutional buildings including two universities, three hospitals, and four parks. The area was first settled in the mid-19th century by farmers and their families who located on the eastern edge of downtown Redmond. In 1881, University Place was designated as the location for Washington State University which then grew to become one of America’s leading higher education institutions with over 30,000 students. today UW Campus dominates the skyline with its iconic facing clocktower while other buildings dominate streets around it such as Union Station and Key Arena. The Community has come to be known for its vibrant cultural life with diverse art galleries and performance venues along with lively nightlife that attracts locals and visitors from all over the region. Restaurants include several chains as well as many small businesses catering to university students, faculty/staff, and parents/children alike. There are also several dozen private schools clustered around key hubs within easy access including Union Station (home to Seattle Central Library), Pioneer Square (home to CenturyLink Field), Capitol Hill (home to The National Portrait Gallery), Pike Place Market (home to Safeco Field), or even smaller neighborhoods like Ravenna Park or Ballard Park – each offering unique experiences unavailable anywhere else in town. In recent years there has been an increase in development near University Place including luxury condos atop hills overlooking downtown Redmond as well as apartment towers surrounding key intersections like Union Station/Pike Street/Wesleyan Avenue/International Boulevard etcetera forming what is now known locally as “New University Place” but still anchored by UW Campus across First Street from everything else. While much progress has been made since those early days when University Place consisted of scattered farms and homes off busy arterial Roadside Streets such as Marionette or Elliott Streets it remains an important part of Northwest Washington history that will continue To grow & develop into tomorrow!

University Place is a neighborhood in the Washington, D.C., city of Alexandria. It was developed between 1871 and 1875 by General John H. Reagan as part of his plan for developingAlexandria's eastern border. The present-day University Place was originally named Arlington Heights after Arlington County, Virginia, then part of Maryland; the name was changed to University Place in 1879 to honor the United States Military Academy at West Point which had been founded that year. The area now known as University Place was first settled by Scotch-Irish immigrants who arrived in droves during the period from about 1790 to 1830. Some may have also come from what is now northern Virginia or western Maryland during this time frame. One early settler, James Caird, located on what is now Old Georgetown Road near Potomac Avenue, built a log cabin in 1792 while working for Captain John Smith of HMS Discovery on his survey of the area around Alexandria Bay. In 1800 Caird married Sarah Stiles (died 1806) and their children began to live here permanently with their parents until they moved out when they acquired land east of Prince George's County line where they erected a house called "The Gables" in 1820-21 following the death of their father Alexander Stiles Sr.. In spite of its many hardships during the Revolutionary War (1781-83), Georgetown became one of America’s most prosperous small towns due to its close trade with Great Britain and its location on an active naval base at Norfolk Naval Yard which offered opportunities for business growth both before and after Confederation that began in 1789 when England ceded control over North America to new nation USA under King George III with conditions including an end to British trading privileges along US coastlines). It should be noted that only a very limited amount Irish Catholic settlement took place within Alexandria limits prior to Confederation since these people were primarily engaged in commerce and agriculture outside town limits although some did form families within town limits such as those led by Paddy Gilmore who owned several acres just south of Old Georgetown Road near today's Pennsylvania Avenue NW corner until he sold it off piecemeal beginning about 1800 included herein) . Although English speaking Scots were numerous throughout much later parts/estates east associated with early civilization surrounding us including Prince Georges County (now Fairfax County) and Loudoun County through intermarriage with local Anglo Puritans – see generally Dunlap’s History Of Northern Virginians 1861 vol 2 page 549ff – no Irish Catholics living among them at this time either whence enmity towards them would develop long into history especially after passage of Act 1002 relative thereto providing legal redress against any illegal activity perpetrated therein) . A few exceptions might occasionally be made but such as Dr Thomas Ashe who lived hereabouts during earliest days Of Washington etc.) University Place rapidly grew becoming one of "the great commercial centres" hosting various businesses along Potomac Avenue NE & SW before joining other areas adjacent via streetcar lines gradually extending thence downtown culminating finally at Seventh Street WSW cornering Uptown streets formerly known as “Old Towne” becoming more so thereafter characteristically paralleling Uptown Boulevard WNW & SE eventually reaching its current boundaries today following original street alignment established circa 1800 ±150 years ago! Here too significant contributions were made by men like J P O'Neill successive Mayor/Council members starting about 1870 thru 1890 inclusive making him incidentally one notable founder & developer along Philosopher Row, immediately adjacent uptown w/then quickly adjoining Now Yorktown Heights Cemetery nearby also home next door (& still does so!)to presidents Harry Truman thru LBJ ) - continuing good work done here even up thru recent years! From northeast College Park all the way uptown via Ensign Street WNW Cornering First Street continuing straight westerly past now National Press Club building there having once stood facing west across Union Station Yards until destruction caused by fire occuring therein circa 1963 ) virtually every important building or landmark mentioned supra plus scores more Since University Place was formally established folks like Dockery 3rd Mayor 1945 thru 1951 4th Ward Councilman 1951 thru 1957 5th Ward Councilman 1958 thru 1974 6th Ward Councilman 1975 thru 1987 7th Ward Councilman 1988 thru 2001 8th Ward Councilman 2002–present).
