Tumwater was founded in 1868 as a Mormon settlement on the site of an ancient Indian village and today has a population of about 150 people. The name "Tumwater" comes from the local Chehalis River which flows through town and provides drinking water for most of it. The first settler in Tumwater was Jerald Fenton who arrived in 1868. He named his community after the Chehalis River and built a cabin near its mouth. A post office called "Tumwater" was established in 1870, but it never caught on and no mail arrived here until 1886 when Hiram Morse set out to deliver mail from Portland to Salem using horseback. In 1907, Brigham Young University (BYU) moved to Pullman, Washington County, Oregon, north of Tumwater on land donated by John Cranch which he had purchase from the Confederated Tribes of Metlachatkaluk Indians along the Snake River during their war with the US government over Upper Columbia Treaty rights In 1919 BYU left Pullman for Waco Texas where it continued to operate until 1970 before becoming an independent university again In 1970 BYU merged with Utah State University (USU), now known as Utah State University-Hawaii The townships that make up Tumwater have remained mostly separate since then including annexations by both USU and Hawaii . Today there are only 150 residents living within town limits while more than 2,000 people live in nearby suburbs or rural areas surrounding it including Pullman and Beaverton On average there are 4 school children per teacher while more than 10 businesses provide services such as plumbing, grocery stores/markets/delivery services etc., all without any public funding whatsoever although some private donations do exist such as a park located just east of town that includes beach access and paddleboarding facilities

The first people to live here were the Yakamas who established a village on east side of Tumwater Creek in 1851. They left in 1853 when they were forced out of their land by the Umatilla Indians and later moved to present-day Walla Walla County.
In 1862, The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through this area and named it "Tumwater" after Lieutenant Colonel Cheyenne Custer's water point at the headwaters of the Snake River.
In 1880, Tumwater became part of the Union Pacific Railroad system when that railroad was organized from Nebraska to Oregon. A sawmill operated here until 1906 when it closed because of competition from mills in Salem, Oregon. In 1916, Tumwater had 1 store and 3 residences; its population size had swollen to 10 families by 1920.

The post office closed here on July 14th 1930.
In 1935-36 local farmers formed a cooperative to raise hay while World War II raged overseas; they continued operating the Cooperative Hay Mill until 1951.

On November 12th 1946, Mrs Florence Hester founded TUMWATER LODGE as an educational institution for women.
Mrs Hester donated all proceeds from her membership dues ($25 per year) going into founding fund which she set up for future use.
