Tumwater is located on the Tumwater River, about 25 miles (40 km) south-southeast of Seattle and 50 miles (80 km) north-northwest of Tacoma. The name "Tumwater" likely originated from the Chehalis word tumwah which means "a narrow beach." The first white person to reside in what is now Tumwater was Captain George Vancouver who explored Puget Sound in 1792 during his journey from British Columbia to Alaska and back. In 1881, Captain John Denny founded a small town named after him called Dennyville on the east bank of the river where he built a bridge over the Tumwater River and began trading goods with Native Americans from upriver. In 1910, whenWA localities were organized into counties, Tumwater County was created out of portions of Kitsap and Stevens Counties including parts of present-day Thurston County west of Olympia and northeast of SeaTac Airport. The village site at present day's intersection of Hwy 99W and US 101 became known as "Dennyville". When Thurston County was created in 1916 it included much more territory than it does today including most notably present day Pierce County to its southeast; however, all but 1/3 acre (0 hectares) within Thurston boundaries remain within Tumwater today. A post office called "Dennyville" opened in 1910, and closed in 1912 due to lack thereof mail volume; however, an old abandoned schoolhouse still stands there today serving as a community center for residents until recently when it has been used as offices by Wenatchee Valley School District #1 since 2001. A branch courthouse also stood there until 2003 when it burned down. By 1905 there were only 10 people living in what is now Dennyville – by 1918 there were over 100!
In 1925 Kootenai Indian Reservation was established adjacent to modern day Olympia - making Dennyville their new seat should they ever leave their reservation.
