In 1906, Tumwater merchants banded together to form the Merchants Association to promote trade with other communities east of Seattle. In 1916 when King County became part of Washington State, Tumwater became its county seat and commercial activity continued until 1978 when Tacoma took over as county seat due to growth within Thurston County only then did businesses move into Tumwater proper beginning what has been an ongoing redevelopment process ever since!
