The Coast Guard has been in place in Tumwater, Washington since 1920. The first coast guard station was built on the current site of the Tumwater State Park in 1922. From its inception, the Coast Guard has played a critical role in safeguarding our coastline and waterways. As part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Coast Guard is responsible for patrolling America’s coasts, providing coastal communities with rescue and security services, and protecting maritime interests. Today, the Coast Guard continues to play an important role both onshore and offshore. In 2018, they responded to over 1,000 incidents across our country – including 102 rescues – which helps keep us safe while we protect our coastline. The Coast Guard Gift History began when Congress passed legislation authorizing gifts to be given to members of the Coast Guard from private individuals. This act created a fund that would be used to purchase equipment or other items for use by the Coast Guardsmen stationed at various stations around America. In 1969, President Richard Nixon issued Executive Order 9282 which directed all Governors of States within 100 miles of any Federal oceanographic research station to provide financial assistance for such efforts as election campaigns mounted by NOAA scientists working at those sites- this order helped support Operation Highwire during that year’s Alaska earthquake campaign (see photograph). Tumwater, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Tumwater were fur traders and missionaries in the mid-19th century. European settlement began with the building of a logging railroad in 1887 which linked Tacoma and Olympia. By 1910, there were over 1,000 people living in Tumwater; by 1920 it had reached its peak with over 3,000 residents. However, due to economic struggles during World War II and the Korean War, Tumwater experienced a decline during the postwar period. In the 1990s through 2000s however it underwent a renaissance as an agricultural town with new businesses moving into downtown after being vacated by industry or relocating from other parts of King County. The creation of Interstate 5 in 1965 changed much about rural life in King County as highways replaced local roads as primary travel routes for many residents; this also affected Tumwater as Logging Road turned into I-5 along its route through town (along what is now Pioneer Way). Businesses abandoned downtown following this change but Downtown maintained some vitality until recently when there has been little activity on either side of First Street between Union Station and KeyArena because these areas are both served by Seahawks football games (the stadium) and nearby CenturyLink Field (the home ballpark). Downtown has seen several efforts to revive it including One Fourth St., LLC., which bought most of downtown between First and Second Streets from City Hall for $2 million In July 2018 it was announced that Amazon would be constructing a new warehouse complex on a site near Downtown called "HQ2". This will increase competition for jobs Downtown which could lead to further decay if not renovated or redeveloped soon

Tumwater is located in the state of Washington and is a town in the counties of Pierce, King, and Chelan. The population was 4,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-Stevens county seat. The first Europeans to visit Tumwater were missionaries from Japan who called it Takasaki on October 13, 1848. The settlement grew quickly after gold was discovered nearby in 1850, and by 1853 there were over 100 people living here. By 1870 Tumwater had a post office, school, jail and store. In 1872 John Wesley Powell made his first journey through what would become Washington State when he crossed the Snake River at Tumwater Pass. When he arrived in this area he named it Northwest Territory because it did not yet exist as a territory but lay just east of where today’s Olympia stands. In 1907 the town was renamed for General Arthur J. Pershing given that he had been military governor of Washoe County at that time and also home to Fort Sill Army Base which served as an important training ground for American forces during World War I. General Pershing also donated land adjacent to his ranch in King County to build an army camp which became known as Pershing Park today. A local group of businessmen organized a farmers market in 1912 which soon became one of the most important businesses locally based in Tumwater with over 30 vendors selling fresh produce from morning until night- much like our current grocery store business model today! In 1945 a new high school opened attended mostly by white students while black students took classes at Douglas High School across the street thanks to integration efforts spearheaded by then Superintendent Drue Bennett! 75%+ minority enrollment continues into our present day! On January 1st 1957 voters approved incorporation becoming Town Hall #1 & subsequently electing their first Mayor & Councilmembers including future UAW Vice President Bob Latham !!!
The region around Tumwater was first settled by the Chehalis tribe in the late 1700s. The town of Tumwater was founded in 1854, and it became an important agricultural center during the late 19th century. In 1927, Tumwater was renamed for John F. Kennedy, who had been president at that time.
