The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Tukwila, Washington was established in 1916 and has been responsible for building a variety of naval ships over the years. The shipyard is home to the USS Tacoma (LHD-3), USS Kitsap County (LHD-4), USS Spokane (SSN-827), and USS Wenatchee (AGI-7) among others. The shipyard also produces the Navy's Littoral Combat Ships, which are designed to countering threats on coastal waters. One of the most famous vessels that the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard built was the USS Tacoma. The Tacoma was originally meant as a patrol boat but it saw service during World War II as a destroyer escort and then as a carrier aircraft tender. After the war, she served in various campaigns including Operation Torch in North Africa and Operation Overlord in Europe. In 1951, she was decommissioned and sold to Turkish authorities who renamed her Yalçınbaşı. She spent many years being used as a floating amusement park before she finally arrived at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard where she now rests belly up on dry dock awaiting her future restoration project. Designed by Japanese architect Yoshinobu Mori, this vessel is one of few warships designed specifically for operations offshore rather than within port facilities like other destroyers or submarines constructed at this time. During World War II, Tukwila served as an airfield for Boeing airplanes manufacturing during World War II’s Pacific War and also played a role in other wars fought in that era such as Korea and Vietnam In 1941, after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor led to America entering World War II,[1] local businesses began making donations to help buy war bonds for American citizens living overseas[2] On December 7th 1941 Japanese bombers attacked Seattle[3], primarily hit targets near downtown.[4][5][6][7] Planes from nearby Boeing Field dropping bombs on downtown Seattle damage many buildings including the old Occidental Building which housed Seattle’s largest bank at that time (JSM Fine Arts), Blanchard Block (now home to KIRO Radio) [8], First National Bank building [9], several schools and two churches were destroyed or damaged with loss of life:[10] Seventy-eight people died with only three injury: one person was killed outright (a fire), one person was seriously injured but not classified as dead until later when he was found breathing under rubble wearing only his underwear[11], and five others were captured alive but executed soon afterwards:[12] This attack also marked perhaps Japan’s deadliest land loss during WWII with over 2200 fatalities reported
