In the early 1900s, the Seattle Navy Yard was home to one of Washington’s earliest naval installations. The yard had been founded as a Marine Hospital in 1851 and eventually became a navyyard after the Civil War. During World War I, the navy station at Seattle served as an important logistical support hub for American forces fighting in European theaters. At its peak, the navy station employed over 1,500 sailors and Marines. In 1945, when the navy left Seattle, it left behind a legacy of maritime gifts from local businesses and individuals. One of the most significant gifts given to the navy Station at Seattle was a large shipment of munitions arriving by ship on December 6th 1915. This gift represented not only timely support for American military campaigns during World War I but also signaled Washington’s growing commitment to defense against potential aggression from abroad. The munitions shipment marked an important milestone in Washington’s relationship with America’s largest military power and helped create lasting friendships between both nations. The United States Navy has a long and proud history of deploying ships and personnel to support our allies and partners in the world. The USS John F. Kennedy (CV-82) is one of these vessels, deployed to the Arabian Sea on Aug. 2, 2017 as part of Operation Mike Warrior. This deployment was conducted in support of coalition operations against the extremist group Daesh (ISIS/ISIL). The JFK demonstrated its capabilities by conducting airstrikes against ISIL targets from a distance, conducting amphibious landings, providing maritime security and counterterrorism operations off the coast of Oman and Bahrain. In addition to its role in Operation Mike Warrior, the JFK also participated in other engagements throughout 2017 including Destroyer Squadron 30 (DesRon 30), Carrier Strike Group 1st (CSG 1st), Helicopter Squadron 9 “Hawk” and Expeditionary Air Wing 5th (EAW 5th).

During her three months stay in Singapore she conducted surveys along both coasts and collected data that would help improve maritime safety in Southeast Asia. After returning home on December 16th she arrived at Key West under tow from USNS Valhalla (LPD-6). Tukwila is located in King County, Washington. It was founded in 1885 by Ishmael Reed and his family as a small agricultural town. Tukwila grew rapidly during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its location on the Puget Sound and its position as an important shipping hub. The town reached its peak in population around 1930 but began to decline after World War II. By 2000, Tukwila had lost most of its economic significance and had declined from a regional center of commerce to a small rural community with few cultural attractions. However, recent revitalization efforts have brought about new development and progress within the community, providing hope for future growth. Tukwila is situated at the junction of two major transportation routes: The Puget Sound Bridge connects it to Seattle and Interstate 5 links it to Tacoma; both highways provide access to many nearby towns and cities as well as points beyond. The harbor also provides access to numerous maritime businesses, including shipyards that produce warships for Navy use; fishing industry; gas stations; and mobile home parks. Because of these factors, Tukwila has long been an important seaport for trade between the region and adjacent inland communities. Although today's economy is largely dependent on services provided by neighboring towns, such as Everett or Tacoma, Tukwilla remains an important commercial center forKing County—the largest county in America—and its surrounding area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now King County were fur traders working out of Fort Colville on Long Island Sound. In 1805 John Jacob Astor purchased 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of land near present-day Tukwila from Chief Seattle for $200 cash plus three horses and seven otters then considered valuable assets of the Native American people living there at that time (Crowther 1950). The Astors built a farmstead here called "The Colville," which theyoccupied until their death in 1847 (). After their deaths their heirs sold additional land eastward into what is now Pierce County () before finally selling off all remaining holdings west of Mount Baker () in 1865 (). From this point forward until 1889 when it was purchased by developers John Dromgoole () & Charles Goodyear (), much of present-day King County was uninhabited except by occasional settlers traveling through areas along PugetSound Way/Interstate 5 ferry service (. map courtesy KING TV). While there are several theories about why Fife disappeared so rapidly following his purchase (), one explanation suggests that he wasn't able or unwilling to develop it because it would have put him directly at odds with powerful local landowners who could have exerted pressure against him (). Another theory suggests that Fife may not have realized how valuable Puget Sound country really was until he bought it because he didn't understand how quickly farmland here could be developed (). Whatever the reason(), within only 10 years after purchasing his parcel of land Fife had embarked upon one of Americas most massive undiscovered gold mines () - one which would later become known as Olympic Gold Rush (Fenton 1984)). This initial success led him quickly into competition with other miners across Washington state [] while also strengthening ties with British Columbia (); Quebec (); Alberta (); Canada (); & Russia (). Soon enough Fife became one of America’s leading gold producers (), making him one of just a handful individuals everto achieve millionaire status (). In 1916 Finnish immigrant Alvar Aalto visited Tukwila while en route up North Coast Highway from Vancouver via Olympia Heading north towards Seattle (& photos), whereupon he observed “a great city spread out before us like Broadway[], filling all four cardinal directions” (& photo). The Town of Tukwila was founded in 1907 by Seattle businessman George Sheppard. The town grew rapidly, and by 1911 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1912, the city of Seattle annexed Tukwila, and the town's growth slowed. In the 1920s, when Tacoma began to grow rapidly, Tukwila unsuccessfully tried to attract annexation. In the 1930s, when Wenatchee became an agricultural center, Tukwila turned its attention to agriculture as well. By World War II, however, the town's population had dwindled to around 150 people. After the war ended and Tacoma resumed its rapid expansion, Tukwila again attempted to gain annexation but this time failed. In 1959, Tukwila became a suburb of Tacoma.
