In 1907, Jens Jensen donated land to build a high school that would serve the community well. The school would eventually be renamed Kamiakin High School following its opening in 1959. In 1957 retail outlet Sprague's Department Store opened located just south of Highway 101 on Third Street serving as the first business ever to open within walking distance of any public high school students or adults living in Tukwila! Although construction is ongoing on several downtown development projects; including remodeling/updates to Kitsap Middle School; updated parks infrastructure; additions/replacements to old jail cells etc.; many aspects remain TBD pending final approvals from various government officials; residents are patiently waiting their turn while enjoying some much neededpeaceful quietness during these exciting times!
Tukwila was founded in 1889 by Captain George Vancouver and his wife, Mrs. John A. Bennett as a farming community on the site of present-day Tukwila Middle School. The town grew rapidly during the early 1900s as farmers abandoned their land for new opportunities in Seattle and elsewhere. In 1916, the city of Seattle annexed Tukwila, making it one of its first municipalities. The population of Tukwila ballooned during World War II as workers from nearby Boeing plants helped build up the war effort. After the war, many residents moved to suburban areas outside of Seattle, but Tukwila continued to grow through the years until it reached its peak in the late 1960s and 1970s when it began to decline due to various factors including competition from neighboring cities and retirements among its original residents. In recent decades, however, growth has resumed in Tukwilla with plans to redevelop portions of town into luxury housing and professional services.
