In 1912, when the station was first established, it was only a small fishing village located on an unassuming point on Seattle’s Olympic Peninsula. Today, Tukwila is home to one of Washington’s most important Coast Guard stations-the Tukwila Coast Guard Station encompasses over 420 acres and offers a wide variety of services including marine security and law enforcement; search and rescue; coastal guard air traffic management; firefighting; public access; and more. Tukwila is a city in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 24,161 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kitsap County and the home of Boeing Co.'s Tukwila Mfg. Campus. The name "Tukwila" is an early settler name for what is now the city and was given to it by Captain George Vancouver on his 1791 voyage through Puget Sound to survey and map the area which he named after himself, captain of HMS Discovery (later USS Discovery). The first post office in Tukwila opened in 1872. The first railroad reached Tukwila in 1886. In 1907, Boeing began manufacturing airplanes here and continues to do so to this day. In 1967, Tukwila became a town when it annexed its neighboring unincorporated community of Islahue. In recent years there has been significant growth in development around Boeing's campus with new housing developments being built as well as a new light rail station serving the city proper and annexing portions of two other cities: North Seattle and Sammamish Valley. Additionally there are plans for a high school expansion that would add another 1,000 students onto the current campus while also expanding walking/running trails that connect all parts of town together as well as much needed improvement to air quality within the city limits.

Tukwila, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 16,868 at the 2000 census. It is the largest city in King County and the second-largest city in Puget Sound after Seattle. Tukwila's economy depends on its location near Boeing plants and other businesses in the region. The name "Tukwila" is from the Chinook word for "snowy place." The first European settlement in what is now Tukwila was by pioneers led by Captain George Vancouver on July 12, 1792 when he and his party of five set out from Yelm Ferry to explore Puget Sound. By 1803 most of present-day King County had been acquired with Vancouver's grant of land north of where modern-day Olympia now stands. On October 6, 1853, John Wesley Powell discovered gold at Nisqually River near modern-day Tacoma while exploring northwest Washington as part of his exploration of America's new West. This discovery helped spur development around Nisqually Falls and Nisqually Lake which became known as Gold Rush Town because so much gold was found there during that time frame. In 1865 Wofford College opened its doors to students in what would become Tukwila after being founded by Reverend Caryl Emerson Smithwick (1827-1920). In 1907 Tukwila became one of four cities consolidated into KING county under the jurisdiction of Paul Anschutz Goodyear & Company with headquarters located downtown until 1959 when they moved to Evergreen Park outside Minneapolis Minnesota due to noise concerns created by their production activities. A major highway interchange called I-5 served both cities until it was replaced by Interstate 5 99 just east of downtown TUKWILA on May 22nd 1997 replacing all previous exits except exit E (then SR 520) which served only Evergreen Park until that exit closed December 1st 2009 leaving downtown without an interchange for most traffic; this left people travelling between both cities having to take alternate routes or drive through side streets (& businesses). After years of development but little progress towards completing a bypass project announced in February 2005 that would have relieved congestion along I-5 southbound from Northgate Boulevard past Union Station then eastbound past Seattle Center Airport and northbound past CenturyLink Field causing massive backups during rush hours resulting in fatalities since plans were never realized Transportation Minister finally approved funding for a bypass project effective January 1st 2006 dubbed I‐5 South Expressway connecting Northgate Boulevard just south of SR 520 with Eastlake Boulevard going through Stadium Drive then terminating at I‐5 North Expressway just east of Southcenter Drive creating a much needed relief corridor; however this project still faces many obstacles such as lacklustre funding making it unlikely any work will be completed before 2020 A new light rail line serving downtown started service November 3rd 2009 running parallel to I‐5 SOUTHEXPRESSWAY via Pioneer Square before turning northeastward concurrent with Amtrak trains linkingSeattle Center Airport with Everett and SpokaneWashington giving commuters an option other than driving long distances between two large metropolitan areas
Tukwila was first settled in 1847 by Baden Powell, an American explorer and surveyor. The town was named for the nearby Tukwila River. The first post office was established in 1852. In 1872, the city of Seattle was founded across the river from Tukwila, and Tukwila became a part of that city.
