The history of the Tacoma Naval Shipyard is long and colorful. The yard was established in 1887 by Rear Admiral John A. Woolridge as a shipbuilding and repair facility on thesound at Tacoma. It quickly became one of the most important yards in the navy, responsible for building nearly all Navy ships built during World War I, II, and III. In 1961, the Naval Shipyard was transferred to the city of Tacoma under an agreement that merged the two entities. In 1933, the Naval Shipyard began construction of USS Oklahoma (BB-58). The ship was designed by naval architects Commercial Construction Company of Philadelphia and launched on November 17, 1934. She served as flagship of Task Force 2nd Fleet during World War II and reached her target area safely on October 15th 1944 after making nineteen trips acrossthe Pacific Ocean. As a result of her service she earned seven battle stars and three heroism awards. After WWII she was converted into an oil tanker and served until 1986 when she decommissioned at Puget Sound Naval Shipyards where she remains today visitor attraction known as "Oklahoma State Sculpture". Today there are severalUSS Oklahoma memorials located throughout Tacoma including: USS Oklahoma Memorial Park - This park honors America's first nuclear powered warship with a large sculpture honoring both crew members who lost their lives in 1945 while serving with Japan's Imperial Navy as well as all sailors who have fought for our great nation since Pearl Harbor Day fifty years ago! The memorial includes a museum which tells the story of USS Oklahoma from its creation through to her decommissioning in 1986! There is also a playground, picnic areas, restrooms/showers,and numerous parking areas nearby! On May 11th 2019 Oklahomans gathered at USS Oklahoma Memorial Park to dedicate a new addition to their community – OKLAHOMA STATE SCULPTURE! This $30 million dollar statue stands tall in honorof America’s newest atomic submarine – commissioned into service on September 1st 2020! Located adjacent to USS Oklahoma Memorial Park near Interstate 5 exit 140A you can enjoy beautiful views of downtown Seattle while admiring this world-renowned sculpture!

The first Europeans to visit what is now Tacoma were traders from Russia in 1847. In 1851, the Territorial Legislature of Washington designated Tacoma as the new capital of Washington Territory following the California Gold Rush. The city grew rapidly during this period with 3,000 residents reported by 1870. A fire destroyed much of Tacoma in 1889 and prompted a new plan for growth that called for an increase of only 10% each year until 1925; however, this did not happen because the City Council resisted outside development proposals. In 1913, Seattle was renamed KING-TV station KEXI after then-Governor Hiram Johnson had vetoed legislation to create an east coast bureau of radio control which would have been centered in Seattle. On July 15th 1915 while most people were out celebrating Fourth of July weekend, a large explosion rocked downtown Tacoma killing one person and injuring dozens more. This event became known as "The Great Sacramento Bombing." It was later determined that explosive material had been packed into a small bomb hidden inside a can filled with coal oil which went off when detonated near Magnolia Street NW (now First Avenue NE). With World War I drawing closer and concern over Japanese nationals living within America growing ever larger, on November 9th 1918 Congress passed The Nationality Act which defined Americans as "the citizens of the United States or any State wherein they may be located". As part of this act Indian reservations were also established throughout western Oregon and southern Idaho Territory including portions of Tacoma including Camas Prairie and Lakewood Cemetery where many Japanese American troops from WWII concentration camps are buried
