The Tacoma Air National Guard 242nd Fighter Wing is the oldest air force unit in Washington and has been flying combat missions since World War II. The wing was activated on November 16, 1941 as the 142d Fighter Squadron at Tacoma Municipal Airport. It was redesignated the 242d Fighter Group on January 1, 1942 with P-40s from the 435th Bombardment Squadron and engaged in combat against enemy forces in the North Pacific Ocean during World War II. On February 6, 1945, the group transferred to Japan and fought in the Battle of Okinawa. After returning to United States soil on October 5, 1945, one month later it re-equipped with F-4C Phantom aircraft from 433rd Bombardment Squadron at Spokane Army Air Base and flew operations over Japan until its activation into Tactical Air Command (TAC) on December 15, 1945. The group's last mission was Operation Downfall which USAF units carried out against Communist Chinese targets along Formosa Strait. In all its years of service within TAC it flew more than 11 million miles! Inactivation occurred September 30, 1947 when Washington ANGactivated its own fighter squadron - 176th Troop Carrier Wing at Cheney AFB effective October 1st after a transfer of assets by Headquarters Northwest Airlines (HNA). Washington ANG reactivated host unit status for 242d FG on October 1st 1946 upon activation of 176th TCW at Cheney AFB effective September 30th following a transfer of assets by Headquarters Northwest Airlines (HNA). Placed under command were: HQ 406th FS[P-51D] "Mighty Mites" from Kingman AFB AZ; HQ 914th FS[F-4C] "Wildcatters" from Wenatchee WSB; HQ 711th FW[F-4E] " Mustangros" from Topeka KS; HQ 181st BG[A-6N/SRV+PBM&QRB]" Thunderchiefs" from Ellsworth AFB KS; HQ 263rd BG(RCS)[A-7N/SRV+LGM]"Sharks" from Washtenaw Heights MI; HQ 331st BW(rcsb)"Toothpaste Wars'". Unit continued to fly callsigns through conversion to AAFTS [All American Flying Training School], but most students graduated prior toactivating school name change ceremony which took place on April 8TH 1948 when unit reverted back to 306 th FG [306 th Fighter Group]." After almost 40 years active duty our unit will come down permanently August 2020 as part of phaseout process for all U.SAAF components worldwide."

After territorial residents approved an official plat for Tacoma on November 3, 1854—the first time land had been surveyed within what is now King County—the city began rapid growth as waves of immigrants arrived seeking work opportunities and access to new markets (e.g., wheat fields outside Seattle). By 1870, Tacoma had over 20 businesses including five banks and four grocery stores catering to German settlers living along Lake Union Boulevard just south of downtown. During World War I, Tacoma played an important role as a military airfield providing training for pilots from all over America; many American servicemen died or were injured here while serving their country overseas. The post-World War II boom spawned new development such as high-rise apartment buildings near Interstate 5 and Boeing Field which remains home today to Boeing company employees commuting into Seattle or Portland via Interstate 5
