On July 7th, they elected George W. Smith as their first commander-in-chief. The committee also appointed John Haggerty as secretary-treasurer and James Condon as inspector general. The first active duty military engagement occurred on September 3rd when three men were killed while serving with Captain Charles Ladd’s regiment at Battle of Pembina Creek. After two years of organizing, on December 1st 1882, the Joint Committee disbanded after only one meeting due to lack of funding. However, this did not mean that the Guards did not continue their efforts; they merely lacked organizational stability until 1886 when they formally became an independent organization under command of Major General Edwin Mott United States Volunteers (USV). From 1886-1892 Major General Mott managed all aspects of militia activity within Sunnyside including instruction and recruitment; he also oversaw officer training programs which included sending soldiers away to Basic Military Training (BMT) at Camp Chase Army Ammunition Plant in Illinois where they would learn how to use artillery weapons and fire into battle formations. In 1896 Lieutenant Colonel Alfred Jurgensen became Commanding Officer USV – Sunnyside area with jurisdiction extending from Elliott Street eastward through downtownSunnyside towards Lake Union Boulevard . He was succeeded by his second lieutenant Colonel Charles Welker who served from 1897-1902 . During Welker’s tenure there were numerous changes taking place within the Guard including: establishment of company headquarters (1898), issuance of badges and insignia (1901), regulations governing military discipline (1902), establishment of battalion headquarters (1904), organization into regiments/ brigades (1906), assignment or transferability of equipment (1908) Under Welker’s leadership infantry companies were increased from five officers and twenty enlisted men per company to ten officers and forty enlisted men per company while artillery batteries increased from two companies each to four companies during this time period Additionally Colonel Welker initiated numerous community projects such as providing free dumpsters for residents every month during wintertime while maintaining full troop strength so that people could still enjoy their summertime activities without fear that their park would be closed down . In addition colonel welker is credited with developing hand grenades which replaced muskets used at BMT during World War I

However, recent redevelopment has brought some vitality back to the town center and overall economy as businesses invest in new technology or move into adjacent districts such as Northgate and Maple Valley. There have been several attempts at annexing neighboring towns since 2007; however no annexation has yet taken place due to differences in support among locals for either full annexation or split vote decisions that would have resulted in both towns becoming part of Poulsbo-Douglas School District (PDSD).
