Sunnyside is a census-designated place in Washington State, United States. The population was 5,428 at the 2000 census. Sunnyside is located on the east side of Lake Washington, just south of Seattle. Sunnyside is part of the Bellevue–Kirkland–Edmonds Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Sunnyside were the Hohans and their families who moved there fromMinnesota in 1859. A post office called "Sunnyside" was established in 1881, but it was discontinued in 1912 because of its close proximity to Kirkland. In 1916, a group of entrepreneurs named themselves the Sunrise Company and began developing land that would become Sunnyside. The company built a small town on land they bought from the Umpqua Tribe and renamed it Sunrise (later shortened to Sunnyside). In 1928, when Seattle became an incorporated city, Sunrise merged with nearby Edmonds to form Edmonds-Sunnyside Corporation which continued operating as an independent business until it merged into Microsoft in 1995. One of the earliest businesses in Sunnyside was Harry's Garage which opened up next door to Sunrise Cafe in 1926. Harry's Garage was later acquired by AutoZone and closed down afterAuto Zone merged with Dunder Mifflin Paper Co., one of its predecessors within Microsoft. As Seattle grew more populous and diverse during World War II, many Japanese American employees from Boeing Plant #3 near South Lake Union worked at Boeing Field starting around 1940 while their families resided elsewhere inside Seattle proper or outside King County due to wartime relocation restrictions placed on Japanese Americans living north of Centralia Creek (the site today known as Auburn Hills). This area now includes parts of Redmond and Woodinville neighborhoods northwest of Interstate 90A/Uptown Everett between 56th & 60th Streets NE/NE 20th Avenue N/NE 54th Street S/. After war ended most Japanese American workers were released early by orderof President Franklin D Roosevelt following pressure from Congress; however many continued residing outside Seattle proper for years thereafter due to remaining wartime Restrictions (known informally as " fingertips").
