They served strong black coffee with small pieces of bread as an appetizer. By 1830, John Roscoe had opened a business that became known as the Coffee House on Second Street. This business was run by John Roscoe and his son, BenjaminRoscoe. In 1835, Benjamin Roscoe founded the Sunnyside Coffee Company and began serving roasted beans from his home on Third Street. The Business ran until 1886 when it was bought by George Jaffe who continued to serve beans until he died in 1911. After George Jaffe's death, the company passed away into private hands and it has been gone since then. Today, there are still a few businesses that sell artisan coffee in Sunnyside; however, most of these businesses have closed or changed ownership over time. One of the last remaining businesses is called The Coffee House at 3rd & Main which reopened in 2006 after being shut down for many years. It offers light roast only (no dark) and specializes in Italian-style espresso drinks such as cappuccinos and lattes with foam added for a more luxurious experience than what you would find at most cafes today). The first beans were roasted in a small shop on Capitol Hill. In 1916, the business moved to its current location on 53rd Street SE in Sunnyside. A few years later, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf opened its own café, which became a popular hangout for local residents and professionals alike. In 1978, the business purchased a building at 9th Avenue SW in Sunnyside and renovated it into their current headquarters. Today, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf continues to serve quality coffee to locals and visitors alike from their original location.
Sunnyside is a city in Central Washington located on the east side of the Cascade Mountains. The population was 382 at the 2010 census and 469 as of 2019. Sunnyside is part of the Yakima, Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is served by the Yakima School District No. 2 and by Sunnyside High School. The first European to visit what is now Sunnyside was Capt. Francis Drake in 1592 when he explored what is now central Washington state from his ship "Nova". In 1855, gold was discovered in central Washington near present-day Sunnyside while prospectors were working in what is now Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge. This led to an increase in mining activity around Sunnyside, which led to increased production of red earths and other minerals which were used to build infrastructure including roads, schools, churches and other public buildings throughout the area. Goldmining continued until about 1920 when it largely stopped because of high costs associated with extracting gold from underground mines andBeaver Dam ceased operation on May 28, 1924 due to low water levels caused by heavy rains that fall during winter months.. The last mine closed down in 1926 however some small amounts of gold continue to be extracted today through various methods such as surface exploration or underground drilling. In 1978, Sunnyside joined the city of Seattle as a result of annexation by Seattle through a process called "public vote."
