Spokane, Washington is a city located in the U.S. state of Washington. The population was 41,815 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Spokane County and the second-largest municipality in Northwest Washington after Seattle. The namesake of Spokane is a creek that flowed through the city for more than two centuries before being diverted to form Lake Superior by King George III in 1847. Spokane's growth has been greatly assisted by its location on both banks of the Spokane River and its proximity to major metropolitan areas including Seattle, Tacoma, and Bellevue. Spokane first appeared on maps as early as 1792 when French traders named it La Pointe du Lac because of a high point on the riverbank near what is now downtown. In 1847, when General Order No. 8 was issued directing all Indian affairs within Indian Territory, Chief Joseph called upon settlers to move into what is now Spokane County from various parts of central Washington due to lack of space on their reservations. Most people chose to move westward along what became known as Major Avenue into what is today’s downtown area about 2 miles east of present day Union Station; but some decided instead to settle along the bank of la rivière (the current name for which may be derived from an erroneous anglicized pronunciation given this name by missionaries in 1853) which became known as “The Waterfront” or simply “The Landing” because so many people built their homes here during its early years. This area eventually would become known as “The Swamp” and continue to play host to small businesses until well into the 21st century when development began moving forward rapidly along Main Street towards Union Station and Interstate 5 (now I-5 South). In anticipation of further growth within Little America Township adjacent to downtown Spokane Falls - then only an agricultural community with few buildings other than mission churches - commissioners appointed Augustus Beecher in 1873 developed what would later become Beacon Hill Park while residents constructed new housing around Beecher's store and home atop an hill overlooking town center. Beecher soon realized that he could not carry out his plans alone and formed a partnership with Alexander Graham Bell who leased land northeast of town on Belle Plaine Road for experimental Telephone experimentation begun that same year; these experiments continued until 1915 when telephone service was finally established between Bell Center inSeattleand Spokanesburgh following repeated efforts by entrepreneur George Eastman over several years beginning in 1889 Our Mutual Friend magazine reported having seen telephone conversations taking place between Russian diplomats stationed abroadat one end and citizens living near Walla Walla Falls at another As early as 1886 wire services were reporting that engineers were working on ways possibleto bring electricity directly from coal mines outside Spokane Valley without traveling too far or relianceanthe useofsteamboats or wagons drawn by horses or mules In 1893 President Grover Cleveland signed legislation creating Western Electric Company with offices at 10th & Harrison Streets spokane valley Shortly thereafter Western Electric introduced electric streetlights throughout the valley becoming oneofthe most important factorsin ensuing rapid economic development By 1899 there were more than 50electricians employedbyWestern Electric Corporation including 24 deputies assigned exclusivelyto lighting duties After World War I prohibitionist sentiments increased among native Americans resultingin numerous law enforcement actions targeting liquor sellersalong main streets late at night despite promises made earlier by local politicians notrelatedtothe war effort A supervised Liquor Showcase operated monthlyoutside Eastern Market until 1951when operationswere moved inside Eastern Market permanently
On July 4, 1847, Spokane was chartered as a town by the Territorial Legislature. The first post office was opened in Spokane on July 10, 1847. On February 14, 1861, the first school in Spokane opened with 8 students and no teachers. The city of Spokane reached its peak population growth around 1900 when it had over 100,000 residents. However, this growth stopped after World War II due to several factors including the brain drain from Seattle which resulted in a decrease in employment opportunities for Spokaneians. The city's population decreased again after the recession of 2008-2009.
