The first European to visit what is now Spokane was Juan de la Plata on his way to found Boise, Idaho on July 24, 1792. The first store opened in 1827 at what is now Main Street and Second Avenue. In 1847, Spokane became a school district with its own Board of Education In 1907, Spokane built its first light bulb as part of an effort to become more energy efficient. At that time there were no electricity providers east of Tacoma so lights had to be powered by candles or kerosene lamps until 1908 when a wire service company came up with a plan to provide electricity through cables running between Tacoma and Olympia In 1915 King Features Syndicate published an editorial entitled "The Spokanese" calling for annexation of all northwestern Washington counties including Spokane because they wanted more fertile land for farming while limiting immigration. This led to intervention by local politicians who successfully opposed annexation without losing popular support Spokane's growth continued through World War II as many businesses moved out of town due to wartime shortages which created new opportunities for housing and business growth but also brought about increasing prices for goods citizens could no longer afford Afterward Spokane experienced rapid social transformation with waves of newcomers redefining how American cities functioned becoming known as "theArrowheads". Many aspects of these changes such as language usage (due to influxes of Asians), entertainment options (due to increase availability of television programming), transportation (due to newly opening highways) and fashion (given increased access thanks once againto easy credit) remain important today especially given the large influxesof people coming into town each year

Spokane, Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Washington and the county seat of Spokane County. The population was 515,723 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the Snake River near its confluence with the Pacific Ocean. The first European settlers in Spokane were French Canadians who founded Fort d'Iton in 1792 and built a trading post there. In 1847, after Manifest Destiny became an American idealism movement, President James Kansa appointed General George Aiken to survey Indian reservations east of the Columbia River for possible settlement by Americans. He recommended that Spokane be made a part of that land because it had potential for growth as an agricultural center and its location on a trade route linking Canada with California made it attractive to investors. In 1853, Congress passed legislation creating Spokane County and named it after General Aiken's recommendation. The first courthouse was built in downtown Spokane in 1855 and local resident Whetstone Sells became first mayoralty candidate that year when he won election over incumbent John Pemberton by acclamation from his citizens living on rural farms south of town. In 1862, Spokanese residents helped lead a successful uprising against military rule led by Chief Joseph Sahm (credited with saving much important Northwest property during the 1863 Battle of North Dakota). Afterward they formed their own government which lasted until 1865 when Spokanese residents rejoined the federally organized United States Army under MajorGeneral Alfred Terry to resist annexation by Mexico following its War for Independence (1846-48). During World War II, Spokane played an important role as one of America's most forward-thinking cities; starting out small but growing rapidly into one of the largest metropolises in North America despite difficult economic conditions caused by war production shortages. During peacetime from 1951-1962, however,spokane experienced rapid decline due to suburbanization and heavy industrial development within walking distance or less than two miles (3 km) of downtown locations housing large numbers of people working close together without any public space or greenspace available to enjoy natural surroundings or interact directly with neighbors beyond what could be learned through formal education opportunities created at that time through school districts operated within municipalities boundaries throughout North America; this type characterized today as "megacity." The last major waves of immigrants started arriving during World War II—Italian refugees fleeing Mussolini's Italy; Polish refugees escaping Nazi Germany; Iranians fleeing Iranian occupation during World War II – all seeking refuge from persecution and violence back home countries including Greece where millions died trying to escape via Romania before reaching Mandatory Palestine–the only country then open to them after more than three centuries stretching along both coastslines: Europe -northwest corner -Israel -southwest corner As these groups settled down new families were born into those established refugee populations across northwest North America: Croatian Americans settled near Seattle while Mexican Americans settled around Tacoma; Vietnamese bought homes around Portland while Afghan refugees moved into Des Moines just north of Iowa City; Somali students studying computer programming atUI dropped out en masse once they got their visas so they could stay and work opportunity opened up immediately upon arrival instead.) After the war, Spokane underwent a transformation that included becoming one of America's most diverse cities with weak traditional industries that have since become dominant in their respective fields. Today, Spokane is known for its vibrant arts scene and cultural attractions such as art museums, parks, theatres and libraries.
