On the morning of December 4, 1914, Spokane Valley residents woke to a festive surprise: an entire column of ships had sunk in their harbor! The vessels were from Vancouver, British Columbia and were on their way to Seattle for a shipment of coal. (The shipwrecking was known as the Coal Canyon Massacre.) The local newspapers reported that the crew of one of the boats had been killed, but no one knew how many others had died. Within days, word arrived in Spokane Valley that help was on its way. A group of men from Spokane Valley teamed up with men from Tacoma and Olympia to build four boats and set out into the river. They paddled upstream until they sighted a buoy identifying the location where they should go next. Theboats then continued downstream until they reached safety. Aftermath: The townspeople quickly erected a memorial to remember those lost in the sinking and donated money towards research into what caused the disaster. Today, you can visit the memorial at Pier 22 or take a cruise downriver on one of the old steamboats that used to ply these waters.

Spokane Valley is a small but rich agricultural area located in the eastern third of the U.S. state of Washington. The valley was named for Spokane, then a small Indian village, and was first settled by white people in 1858. The town of Spokane became a center of mining and agriculture during the late 1800s and early 1900s, while the surrounding rural areas remained largely undeveloped until after World War II when large-scale industry took hold. Today, Spokane Valley is an important economic node in western Washington and its residents are known for their agriculture, fishing, forestry, manufacturing, and tourism industries.
From ancient Egypt to Japan, marine gifts have been a popular tradition in both countries. In China, sharks were common as symbols of good luck and strength. The Japanese bestowed the same significance on salt water fishes, such as theuma (a type of tuna) and nihonmatsu (a type of salmon). The Egyptians regarded fish as lucky symbols because they could provide food for the god Set during his monthly inundation cycle. Fish was also seen as a symbol of wealth because it took a long time for an animal to grow large enough to be hunted. When Pharaohs developed their own cultures, they began to gift animals with riches instead of just food. In Japan, there is evidence that whale-related objects were given as presents from King Sukei I in 6th century BC onwards. From this period onwards, whales became renowned for their oil and meat resources which were exported to different parts of the world. As part of traditional New Year's celebrations in many cultures, seafood items are often given as gifts during this time period. One example is the Takahashi Nari no Atsuta (金属海立新年礼), or "New Year's Gift" dinner which features dishes made from sea creatures such as lobster, crab, shrimp and urchin.
The Marine gift history goes back to the early 1800s when sailors and marines would send gifts to their friends and families on the sea. The most common type of gift was a bottle of wine, but there were also different types of goods such as food, clothing, or tools.
Spokane Valley is a town in Bonneville County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,744 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bonneville County. The name "Spokane" is from the Spokane language and means "the place where the snow falls." The first European to set foot in what is now Spokane Valley was Captain George Vancouver on July 26, 1792 during his survey of Puget Sound for the King George's Bay Company. He named the spot "Vancouver Island" after his captaincies vessel HMS Discovery and it remain so today. On October 12, 1847, John C. Bennett discovered gold near present-day Spokane Valley while prospecting for claims to be part of the Klondike Gold Rush Treaty land grant given to him by then-President James K Polk. This discovery led to an influx of people into what is now Spokane Valley from all over America as prospectors began searching for new lead and gold deposits in this vast area that stretched from eastern Canada to California and Nevada. It wasn't until 1872 when Mayor Jeptha Sayers formed a committee to study creating a city within the valley that progress was made towards becoming what would later become Spokane Valley. Services were organized with platting taking place in early 1873 and on November 6th of that year incorporation took place under the name City of Spokane Falls with 2 square miles (5 km²) of territory including today's downtown core but not include parts of what are now North Campus or East Campus located east/northeast of First Avenue NE. On January 1st 1875 City Hall burned down leaving only ashes behind which served as a reminder that progress could never be permanent without commitment from those who founded it! Today there are many nods to those early days such as local businesses being called Banks & Trusts bank until 1988 when they merged with CenturyLink which continues operations here today as CenturyLink Bank Idaho Corporation
Spokane Valley was founded in 1867 by George Armistead and his wife Eliza. The valley is named for the Spokane River, which runs through it. The town of Spokane was founded in 1870, and the first post office opened in 1871. In 1897, the city of Spokane was incorporated, and in 1907 the City of Spokane merged with the County of Spokane to form a unified government.
